Most of us agree that the AR is the most flexible semi-automatic platform in terms of stock changes, caliber changes, availability of parts, etc.  You can even mill a lower out of wood.

The AK, while perhaps more difficult to build, certainly has excellent parts availability, and is also available in a wide range of calibers, albeit caliber changes are not as easily accomplished as in the AR.

What's the next most flexible platform, and the next?  The DPMS Gen 1 platform?  The HK roller-lock series?  The FAL?

I'm not asking what's the best rifle - clearly, the DPMS Gen 2 is a better rifle than their Gen 1.  But you can build a DPMS pattern Gen 1 rifle mostly using non-DPMS parts - it's the most flexible and widely supported .308" AR platform.

You can build an AK receiver out of a shovel, a propane torch, and a dremel tool.  And I'm not entirely sure you even need the torch.

Just sayin.

Taurus curve carbine, made with iPhone 6 materials? Would be pretty flexible, damn near pliable

Are you looking for a SHTF weapon, or what. I can't really understand what you're looking for. A survival rifle, or a defensive rifle, or what.

Could be the ACR, if the parts actually came out.

I don't like them, but the HK roller lock guns are pretty flexible.

Quite a few stock and other furniture options, and you can go to different barrel lengths without worrying about a gas system.

Next most flexible semi-automatic platform?

You mean to tell me that there are other highly customizable semi-automatic rifles, besides the AR-15 ?
I need to get my head out from under this rock..

FPNI, but honestly, 10/22 is No2, not the AK.

Flexibility - the ability to change to become a decent weapon in any of those categories, w/o necessarily being the best.

That would qualify, if Robinson was still making their semi-auto Stoner 63 copy, there was aftermarket support for it, and more than 5 of them were produced.

Interchange barrels, calibers, grip sizes, slides, 22 conversion units and turn into a carbine.

True.  There's even a .223" build out now that takes AR mags, I believe.  Dunno how easy it is to change calibers, however.  Would definitely seem to be a more flexible platform than the FAL.

The 10/22 platform is pretty flexible, as long as you want to shoot a rimfire.  As you can make an AK w/ a .22"LR adapter, or in anything from 5.45x39mm to 7.92x57, I'll submit the AK is a bit more flexible than the 10/22.  The 10/22 is more easily converted, I'll grant.

I can make trash out of lots of things.

Like I went to Mcdonalds and made trash out of the burger wrapper, the fry container, and the drink cup. Then I put that trash in the bag it came in and threw all of it together into the trash.

Cheaper than buying AK parts to throw in trash, and tastier.

I was going to post Robinson XCR but you win with Glock. 1911 might  also contend.

Only 1 more year?  Did you call them?

Wonder if they'll even mention any ACR stuff at SHOT this week.

Pssh.  The M4 platform is to hold my M7.

I get the Glock, & the 1911, particularly with the MechTech, but that's not nearly as flexible as building an AK, and having to choose btwn 5.45x39mm, .22"LR, .223", 6.5mm, 7.62x39mm, .308", 7.92x57mm, etc.  The HK roller locks seem nearly as flexible as the AK, particularly as apparently you can build from an HK flat?

You can ask them, right after you ask Vltor about the Bren 10
