I know with XP there are numerous things one could do to really speed things up.    Can such things be done with Windows 7?   It already seems much faster, but are there any tweaks to get the balls to the wall?

I don't think he actually asked for 'stupid' advice.

Well its a good thing I didn't give him any 'stupid' advice then, isn't it.  Want a fast, reliable windows machine in 2010? Use XP.  I would know, I beta tested the shit out of Vista and 7 and have used both pretty extensively since launch.  Now the linux/hackintosh bit was a joke, but a truth filled joke.

Funny, I beta tested the shit out of Windows 7, too, and I find it to be fast and reliable. The speed difference between 7 and XP was negligible.

My test machine was hardly state-of-the-art, either.

Personally, I think Tomislav nailed it.

Disable or limit Aero

If you have more than 3gb of RAM, disable the pagefile

Run MSCONFIG>select start>startup>uncheck anything that doesn't have to be ran at startup

Still on MSCONFIG>boot>advanced options>number of processors, check the box and select "2"

Build a faster computer.

Come to the realization that Windoze 7 is pretty close being as fast as it's going to get out of the box

I just built a faster computer. It hauls so much ass, I have no desire to "tweak" it for more performance. I doubt I'd notice it.

Dude, you must be some sort of l337 hax0r if you 'beta tested' those operating systems. Well fuck what I thought passed for IT experience, I'm gonna go with your awesome post and install 'Hackintosh'. You know, for an optimal computing experience!

Seriously though, going back to XP from Win 7 is stupid advice. Nobody cares that you tried to figure out the RC or something; Win 7 is an awesome product, for which there are many 'performance guides', from articles by Microsoft to countless third party sources. And if you really want to delve into the guts of Win 7 and play around, look here, but be warned. Very easy to kill your system with some of these.

Linux is fine for...people who want Linux. But for people who want Win 7 tweaking and performance tips, maybe it doesn't make any sense to suggest Linux, huh?

Windows 7 is a fucking rock, easily as dependable and snappy (if not more) than XP ever was, but if you've used them "extensively" then you would already know this.

And "beta testing the shit" out of something really has no bearing on release versions, nor does it indicate anything with regard to your ability to put the OS to the test, but, again, any real beta tester would know that.  Hardware, environment, setup, etc, are all variables that have to be controlled to do any real comparative tests.

Perhaps you'd care to share your beta results with the rest of us...you know...post 'em up.  Your benchmarks, etc.  I'd like to see 'em..and post some for 'hackintosh" too if you wouldn't mind.

Why throw "Vista" in there?  Vista was the fucking Windows ME of the 21st Century and has no relevance to anything in this discussion.

"hackintosh"....good LORD man...

Oh, and I am SOOOO

God mode:
  1. Create a new folder.
  2. GodMode windowRename the folder to

     GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

(note that you can change the “GodMode” text, but the following period and code number are essential).
  3. The folder icon will change — double click it to show the GodMode window:

I have this on mine and I'm running Win 7 ultimate in 64-bit
( basically this puts all functions into1 easy to access folder so you don't have to hunt all over the place )
be warned, some of those functions can do some serious damage if you don't know what your doing.

Remember, you must always herp before you derp. That way people know you are trolling. If you derp before you herp, you just look retarded.

Thanks for the laugh. It woke me up from this boring ass desk job.

OP, about the only simple and quick thing you could do would be to disable anything you don't need on start-up and disable aero (turn it down) as much as possible. My rig is about 3 years old (specs below), but it runs 7 just fine for games like team fortress 2, portal...ext...ext... Also able to run photoshop and Sony Vegas (photo and video editing) with little to no lag if those are the only major programs running.

AMD dual core 6000+ (3.0Ghz per core)
4x 2Gb DDR2 800
BFGtech 8800GTS (612mb)
2x WD 500Gb Caviar drives (Raided)
160Gb WD Raptor drive
