I just picked up a new Canon macro lens yesterday...

EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM

This thing is sweet. I probably will never do it justice with my level of picture taking but so far its great. Here are a few pictures just playing around with it at dinner after picking it up. Either zero to very little picture processing by the way, just clicked a few buttons and cropped a little.

The depth of field on this is sweet, this is best probably seen in the first picture of the lens cap.

Lens cap on the counter at the camera store.

Water fall at Pioneer Square

Bottle of Tabasco on the table

Rose on my front driveway. The focus obliterates the background. The background is kind of gravely, looks like it is floating.

Pigeon in the square

Leaves on the tree with the place we ate at behind it.

Ice in my glass of root beer

Nice...time for a ring flash now!

I can see that a ring flash would be beneficial. Probably not 100% necessary or is it? I am fine with the purchase as long as it provides with better output. (or helps to).

Any recommendations? Having just spent this much it will be down the road.

Any samples of pictures with and without the ring flash I can peek at?

I can't really say, as I'm not very knowledgeable on the subject.

I do own one, and in certain situations, it lights things up very nicely.

Well I will probably get one, I don't have a flash at all right now except for the built in flash. And since I like to pour ungodly amounts of money into this hobby then of course I will get one.

Now I just have to find the time to learn Lightroom. That would help a great deal.

The ring flash helps me to bring out scratches in metal, imperfections in manufacturers logo stamps on guns. Things like that. The ability to adjust which side the light comes from helps to side light and pull this detail. My 2 would be to get a standard flash and an off camera cord to be able to achieve alot of the same affect. I have tried to use the ring light for normal work and it doesn't work near as well as a normal flash would with a cord on macro work.

Great pics BTW. I've been considering this lens and seeing the DOF was very helpful.
