Gun shop is no good unless you have some capital to start.  How do you make a small fortune in the gun biz?  Start with a large one (or don't quit your day job).  Ask me how I know.

What skill(s) do you have that can be turned into a business?  Even if others are doing it - can you do it better, or cheaper?

Liquor Store, Gun Shop, Whore house.   Use the hookers to build capital. Branch off in to a casino....

Got to have a little humor

Gun stores require a lot of money to start. 10-50 grand isnt going to get you a decent shop. 50 grand will get you 100 guns at 500 dollars each on average. Now put in the costs of rent, utilities, shelving, insurance, plus the other stuff I cant think of off the top of my head. Thats not to say you cant make it work. For example where I live, there are no gun stores within 25 miles. Well atleast that I have found.  Walmart is the only place that sells ammo. The other big box sportsman stores are all 25-40 miles away. A small mom and pop type gun store could potentially make it (this is AZ and most people  own firearms)

Shoot who said you had to sell guns? AMMO is the big thing right now. Go into any ammo forums and you will see people wanting AMMO. So 1. You can make it and sell it or  2. Just sell it.
If you make it and sell it, you make a ton! IF you sell it only, you have to first GET it to SELL it. And good luck with that!.

Really if it werent against my religious beliefs I would own 10 bars, 5 liquor stores and 1 distribution center for alcohol. You make a TON selling booze. I know people who got in it and wished they never got out of it. I know people who sell it who love it. If you wanna get rich, sell it.

2 questions -
1 - what are the requirements for making and selling ammo?
2 -  when you say booze - are you talking home brew beer or a still / hard liquor?

- i dont have the same religous restrictions

I dont know about manufactoring ammo. I know you would want to hold it under an LLC or corporation to protect yourself if you get sued.  Cause liberals have tried in the past to sue manufacturers. And I dont wanna see anybody lose thier home or anything. I would suggest forming a business to anybody under an LLC or Corporation status , just in case you ever get sued, you are personally protected. You would need a press and knowledge of making bullets. If you make them wrong and they all blow up peoples guns. You will be getting sued! Not from liberals, but from your fellow gun lover!

When I say booze, im saying liquor store. You can make booze, but you will need a license to make it. If you try on your own, you will be arrested!  But I see 100's of people out their making booze. Just dont sell to minors or drunks (and whatever your local laws are.) I usta live in Franklin county, Va. I know their are plenty of guys who will help you make moonshine! ( It was called the moonshine capital of the world during prohibition)

Both booze and ammo is heavy regulated by the government. Contact the ATF and your state government concerning the laws of manufacture or sale. Just be sure with whatever business you form, to form it under C or S coporation status or a LLC to protect yourself from getting personally sued. Good luck!......You now owe me 5% of revenue of first year sales for giving you this information........j/k ;)

Requirements to become an ammo manufacturer have been discussed extensively on other forums.  The big stumbling blocks are:
- Type 06 (ammo mfr), 07 (firearm and ammo mfr), or 10 (firearm, ammo, and big boomensticken) FFL required
- ITAR is $2250/year
- Liability insurance is insanely expensive if you can even find it.

And that's all before you rent space, purchase the machine to do it (a Dillon progressive won't cut it; you'll need the machines that crank out a million rounds a month to be profitable, and those run 5-6 figures), and hire employees to run the machines.

Thanks for the ideas, we're already VERY diversified but are always looking for new ideas, I have a very talented young guy working for me who I'd like to move into a new project. I'm not looking for something to run myself, I've already got more than enough of that. I'm always looking for new ideas I can set up and have someone else run where we both benefit in the long run.

We're rural but within an hour of three medium sized cities.

Bump, because I would like to hear some more interesting ideas.

I'll be closing my business here in GA and moving to OR at the end of the year (roughly). I'm not quite certain that I want to keep doing the same thing (decorative concrete). With the way the construction industry is for the forseable future it doesn't make sense.

So, we really need a good brainstorming session here. Certainly some ideas are more suited to some locations versus others but ideas breed more ideas.

Spotter for those participating in auto-erotic asphyxiation. Prevent them from the embarrasment of being found dead with their pecker in their hand.

Maybe a basic EMT background.

Aside from all this, when you own a gun store, you also have to compete with every other gun dealer on the Internet.  And it is almost impossible to match the pricing available on the Internet.

You would need to have "an angle"...like superior customer service, specialization in a particular type of gun, or something else to differentiate you from your cheaper online competition.

They're not slums, actually really nice houses, but we already have a few and may be adding some more. I really like rental properties for building long term wealth. We have 3 and they're about a break even on cash flow, due to a couple having significant acreage that eat up the positive cash flow.  We're now looking at some that will turn a positive cash flow in the short term.

Thanks for the reply.

I've looked at the ammo loading in the past, back when I was shooting over 1K / week shooting IPSC. Now I'm working too much to shoot that much so I may be able to make a profit, I'd decided before that I'd probably shoot all the profit.

The problem now is finding components, especially primers.

I think it'd be profitable, for the foreseeable future anyway, if you could fix the component problems.

My thoughts exactly, I was thinking of naming it Dennys Guns and Whiskey "Fine firearms and cheap fire-water"
.Living next to a reservation I think I could make more from the t-shirt and coffee mug sales than I will on the guns.

Low start up (15K - 18K), no inventory, no office or store space, no equipment and no employees.  There would be on going marketing and huge upside once it get's rolling (50K+ pre-tax / month).  I'd be happy to discuss and share the outline / prototype if you're willing to sign a non-disclosure.

I'm new to this site and not sure how "PM" works.  Home email would be best ([email protected]).
