Got my daughter a new phone.   Samsung S4.   Unlocked thru ebay.

It will receive text messages and pics, but won't send texts.

I did notice the phone says "unknown" for Network.   My phone (a Sumsung S3) says "AT@T."

We are using Straight Talk.  Her phone is suppose to be a Verizon phone.

Where do I start on setting this $%^#& thing up?

Was your daughter's last phone an iPhone by any chance?

Try getting google hangouts.  Setup hangouts to be the default for sending texts.

My wife has a GS3 that her Dad gave her.  He was on Verizon but we had the phone flashed to Page Plus.  If my wife sends a text using the native text, or Page Plus text, app any reply goes to her Dad on his new phone.  The only way around is when she uses hangouts for all her texting.

check the APN settings?

APN

scroll down to the data settings portion on the above link and select android phone

edit: if you are using a verizon phone on straighttalk's at&t network, straight talk will try to move you over to the verizon ST network.

This. She could still be setup for iMessage instead of standard SMS.

Do this if she had an iPhone

My daughter had two message apps.  One would only read, and the other read/write.  Both were preloaded on her phone.

Check this

This. I know on my phone (not a Samsung, but also Android) you have to select ATT StraightTalk.

On my S3, I am connected to Straight_Talk.

On her APN settings, it says "Verizon Internet".

Somehow I need to change this.

I have an S4 on Straight talk.  On occasion I have to go to APN, hit the menu button and select reset to default when I stop getting mms messages.  There is also an option to add a APN.  What is involved in adding an APN is above my pay grade.

1. Does Straight Talk use Verizon's network in MI?

2.  Is the IMEI clean?

3.  Have you done a factory reset of the phone?

Try this link for straighttalk APN settings.

I tried that, but for some reason Straight Talk does not recognize the phone number or the sim number.

I just "assumed" verizon would work thru Straight Talk in Michigan.

As for the two other questions, I don't know.   Will have to look into those.

Which since Verizon phones are CDMA (except for the multiband phones like the S4 which are also GSM) and AT&T is GSM, would be usually correct.

But the S4 should work voice and 3G/4G HSPA data on AT&T networks (it's multiband), but not LTE (AT&T and VZW use different frequencies for LTE).

Adjusting the APN should get SMS / MMS working.

Thanks for the tips.   Will take me a bit of time to digest that.

Need to get to work.   Will probably call straight talk later and see if they can help me get this part of the phone setup correctly.

Thanks again.   Headed to work.

From what I understand Straight Talk buys time on different networks - and maybe not the same everywhere (I don't find a simple answer to this).

On the other hand the Verizon Galaxy S4 is a multiband (LTE, CDMA/1xEVDO Rev. A (800/1900 MHz) Global Network: EDGE/GSM (850/900/1800/1900), HSPA/UMTS(850/900/1900/2100), sim unlocked phone and should work on an AT&T network with the appropriate SIM - except it won't have LTE data as VZW and AT&T use different LTE frequencies.

But you're going to have to adjust the APN settings.

I spent an hour on the phone with Straight Talk, and the guy was pretty good on helping me get the phone up and running.

It will now send texts like it should, and, it will connect to the internet but only via WiFi........it won't connect to the internet thru the cell towers.

Also, on the status page, it says "Network Unknown."

It's like it doesn't know it's a Verizon phone.
