There was a levee that was failing about two hours ago. Looks like a little water got in.

The live shots of the Quarter dont look bad at all.

WHICH levee? There are many levees in New Orleans. How bad this is depends on which one(s) failed.
If it is one of the Pontchartrain levees then it is indeed bad news.

It was on FOX, they said it was in the 9th something, said everything South of Lake Ponchetrain was flooding, then showed water in the streets....

I've seen a couple reports (CNN, MSNBC...) that said there is 8 feet of water on the east side, and it's rising at about 1 foot per hour.

This cross section of the new Orleans land compostion and elevation can give an idea of the root of the problem.

The cool thing about New Orleans is that when it rains, it makes it's own gravy.

I was wondering how long it was gonna take for someone to throw a Tragically Hip reference in there!
All kidding aside though, I hope those folks in the impact area come out of this thing okay.

That's odd...

I just drove my Chevy to the levee and the levee was dry...

If it keeps on rainin', levee's goin' to break,
When The Levee Breaks I'll have no place to stay.

Mean old levee taught me to weep and moan,
Got what it takes to make a mountain man leave his home,
Oh, well, oh, well, oh, well.

Don't it make you feel bad
When you're tryin' to find your way home,
You don't know which way to go?
If you're goin' down South
They go no work to do,
If you don't know about Chicago.

Cryin' won't help you, prayin' won't do you no good,
Now, cryin' won't help you, prayin' won't do you no good,
When the levee breaks, mama, you got to move.

All last night sat on the levee and moaned,
Thinkin' about me baby and my happy home.
Going, going to Chicago... Going to Chicago... Sorry but I can't take you...
Going down... going down now... going down....

Superdome roof peels off
Aug 29, 2005, 14:45 GMT

NEW ORLEANS, LA, United States (UPI) -- Rain poured into the Louisiana Superdome Monday where 10,000 people took shelter from Hurricane Katrina.

NBC reported the hurricane`s 145 mph sustained winds ripped two 7-foot-by-7-foot vents off the Superdome`s roof, creating gaping holes. Numerous other holes dotted the dome.

The Louisiana National Guard began moving people into ancillary areas and officials said they did not expect the building to fail.

Police report receiving calls from people who had decided to ride out the storm in their homes despite evacuation orders, saying they were stranded.

One man, identified as Chris Robinson, told police: "Come get me. I want to live." He was reported on the top floor of his house with an ax, ready to break through the roof to escape flood waters, reported as high as 9 feet.

The Mississippi River was reported to have risen 15 feet since Sunday night.

WWL-TV reported a levee breach along an industrial canal that was expected to send as much as 8 feet of water through.

In St. Bernard Parish, spokesman Larry Ingargiola said shelters at Chalmette and St. Bernard high schools suffered major damage, WWL-TV reported. CNN reported the parish`s 911 center was destroyed by the storm and the parish was mostly without power.

As of 6 a.m., 317,000 Entergy customers were without power as were 40,000 Cleco customers in St. Tammany Parish.

Trees were uprooted and aluminum siding was peeled off houses in Baton Rouge, Lacombe and elsewhere.

even better yet (Bob Dylan- "Down in the Flood")

Crash on the levee, mama,
Water's gonna overflow,
Swamp's gonna rise,
No boat's gonna row.
Now, you can train on down
To Williams Point,
You can bust your feet,
You can rock this joint.
But oh mama, ain't you gonna miss your best friend now?
You're gonna have to find yourself
Another best friend, somehow.

Now, don't you try an' move me,
You're just gonna lose.
There's a crash on the levee
And, mama, you've been refused.
Well, it's sugar for sugar
And salt for salt,
If you go down in the flood,
It's gonna be your own fault.
Oh mama, ain't you gonna miss your best friend now?
You're gonna have to find yourself
Another best friend, somehow.

Well, that high tide's risin',
Mama, don't you let me down.
Pack up your suitcase,
Mama, don't you make a sound.
Now, it's king for king,
Queen for queen,
It's gonna be the meanest flood
That anybody's seen.
Oh mama, ain't you gonna miss your best friend now?
Yes, you're gonna have to find yourself
Another best friend, somehow.
