GM’s Performance Division paid considerable attention to the HHR’s underpinnings. Tuned at the Nürburgring, the SS-specific FE5 suspension includes stiffer coil springs, unique twin-tube front struts and thicker stabilizer bars. Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS come standard and use 11.65-inch vented rotors up front with 54-millimeter single-piston calipers. Standard 18-inch forged-aluminum wheels are fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport P225/45R18 rubber.

Chevrolet claims the SS package is good for a 0-to-60-mph time of 6.3 seconds and a quarter-mile jaunt in 14.8 seconds at 98.5 mph. With a manual transmission, the HHR SS reportedly has a top end of more than 150 mph. During testing, the HHR SS pulled 0.85 g on the skid pad and lapped the ’Ring in 8:43.52.

Is this some sort of hazing that new engineers at GM Performance have to go through before they get to play with the Corvettes?
