First time I have had a 100lb propane tank. I had it filled last night. Today I mounted it on my trailer and screwed in the regulator for my furnace. Propane leaks everywhere all around the valve.

I took it back off and noticed there wasn't an o-ring on the inside, like my two other 5 gallon propane tanks have.  I need to use this tonight, and it's unlikely any stores will be open unless it is something that Wal-Mart would carry.

Could I remove the o-ring from my 5 gallon tank and use that one?

Also should the bleeder valve be kept open or closed?

Do they sell the o-ring separately?

Propane is heavier than air and sits in low spots. Be careful.

Bleeder off. Check with windex.

I believe all propane valves are the same size (universal) unless you are talking the 1lb camping canisters....which I know you are not.

I've never removed the O ring from a valve though, if you think you can do it safely....it's worth a try.

Do they sell the o-ring separately?

pretty sure they do but it's not an O ring it has a step on it.

if you can for now just pull one out of one of your other tanks to use

It's strange when it was filled at the gas station last night it wasn't leaking that I could tell. I wonder if when they removed the regulator that filled it, if the o ring stuck on. It was about 15* out.

I have filled a lot of tanks and never seen an oring stick. I guess it would be possible though. The orings for 11#, 20#, 30#, 40#, and 100# tanks should be the same. They can be a pain in the ass to replace though.

Is this something walmart would carry?

Pretty sure there is no o-ring on #100 tanks. Not an opd valve like 20 ,30 ,and 40 pounders. It should seal on the shoulder of the pol fitting. Be sure to not use thread tape, it is not needed and can cause it to leak.

Not using threaded tape. No leaks when using a 5 gallon tank.

The regulator from the furnance doesnt have any o rings, just bare threads. I just had the furnance installed and the shop recommended running the 100# tank.

They may not have an o-ring by itself, but they sell a yellow plug that has a ring you can take off and use.

It should seal on the shoulder without an o-ring. Make sure the is no ice, dirt, or burrs that would keep it from sealing. I take it your fitting looks like the bottom one.

It should mate up to a smooth surface you can see in the valve in the top pic. make sure both mating surfaces are clean. Also check to see if both sets of threads are free and clear. Something may be keeping it from threading in far enough. It is common to get ice on threads and it won't thread in far enough.

I just looked at the regulator again.

It is actually more of a rounded stop sign shape... like this...

Yep, seals on the front. Made like that to tighten it into regulator with a socket or wrench. Did you check to make sure the threads are unobstructed?

Yep, all brand new, no burs, dirt or anything.

After hand tightening it will only go about 1/2 of a turn with a wrench. Visual inspection of the threads shows no imperfections.

When connected to a 20# tank it will turn several times w/ wrench after hand tightening
