Needed some magnets for a project went online ordered magnets, never used them before, read they were strong and potentially dangerous.

CSB follows;

Received my magnets in the mail, took them out to the workbench in the garage, opened the magnets and put them on the bench and it was like a Roadrunner cartoon

First thing that happened is I started getting my hands pelted by sharp wood screws from somewhere on the bench;

Then I got hit with a stray cabinet hinge;

By this time I let go and the whole mass of magnets took off hinge and screws in tow, and found my large framing square, kerchunk, there they stayed for a while.

Quick question if anyone knows, how close can these be used to NC magnetic alarm contacts?  I am not using as part of the contact, they are in proximity to the contact.

I heard a story once about a guy who had two very powerful magnets that you didn't want to get stuck together, so he put one in each pocket. He was walking and the magnets found each other.

In all seriousness, be careful.  They easily shatter quite explosively.

I keep a jar of little ones handy.  I use one in my .410 loader to keep hulls from wobbling.   It's inset into the seating post on my ponsness press, there is enough steel in the 209 primer that it latches on to that little magnet and stands up like a wedding peter.

LOL.

How big are they?

Any bigger than one inch and they start to get actually dangerous. A friend has two of the 3 inch diameter by 1 inch thick. Those fucking things are scary.

They sure do.  We were playing with a couple and a guy decided to chuck one up to the support girders up high on the loading dock.  Why he did that, I don't know, but it was quite the display.  Good thing eye protection is required on the dock.  :D

Even the smaller ones are crazy. I had one on the top belt cover on my drill press, just to hold the chuck key when I wasn't using it. I took if off when I realized that it was magnetizing the entire quill and collecting chips when I was drilling steel.

Seriously.

I wasn't exaggerating in the least.

Respect larger neo magnets. They absolutely can injure you, fast, and when you're not expecting it.

3/4 inch, a dozen of them so you get the multiplication factor until I separated.

I used to have a pair of 2" x 1" and they were one of the most dangerous things I've ever owned.  You had to plot your path through the house when carrying one of them in order to make sure you were avoiding metal.  Putting one under the back your hand and placing a 1/2" ball bearing in your palm was painful, probably 20+ pounds of force.  The scariest part was that the magnetic field went from zero to insane over maybe 1/4" of distance so you'd be fine one second and then all of a sudden something jumps up off of the bench and smashes your hand.

I eventually stuck the 2 together and they were impossible to get apart, even with a wedge and hammer.  I got rid of them by throwing them in a commercial dumpster.  They're probably still stuck to it.

I bought a couple of half inch square x 3 inch bars. Took them out of the package, and they slapped together sending a spark and a shard of magnet into my arm. Wrapped them in bubble wrap and threw them away. Be careful.

Jesus how big are they.  You didn't get something stupid size like a 6"x6"x1"   Those things can easiliy break bone.

You can use this calculator to help figure out how far away they need to be.

https://www.kjmagnetics.com/fieldcalculator.asp

Enter the type and size of your magnet, then in the x,y measurement distance enter how far away your sensor is.

Look up the specs for your sensor, but most will trip between 10 and 100 gauss

Thanks!  They are 3/4 disc inch but as mentioned I had a dozen together when I unboxed.

Kid came to the er years ago with a magnet stuck to either side of his nasal septum.  Dad kept telling us what a bright boy he was. I was leaving  but I think the plan was to take him to the or and cut around them. The tissue was probably getting squished anyway.

I have a number of neodymium magnets. A lot of the smaller ones start to corrode and crumble after a few years. Some of the more powerful, larger ones last longer. I have several 25lb pull magnets that are going on 4 or 5 years now and are still good. Some of my smaller ones 5-10 lbs pull are starting to crumble. I don't know if this a property of the magnets or just the quality from a particular manufacturer.

I used some sizable ones back in college on a project. After destroying a few things (and a couple injuries to yours truly), we built little harness and leashes for the magnets for moving them around and tying them down when not in use.

I shit you not

If you embed those into a soft material like silicone, they will eventually work their way out while moving toward a ferrous metal. Ends up as a major fail for a project.

Yeah neodymium magnets aren't to be taken lightly, dont play around with them, dont do stupid shit with them.  Respect what they are and can do, but for me, I only have very small ones but they are the absolute best stud finders I've ever used.

The magnets I have removed from larger SATA hard drives are very impressive.  I am gonna put one on the oil filter of each of my vehicles.

Get a bag of the tiny ones and just chuck them in the air at an ANTIFA rally. So many piercings....

That would be mean, probably would get in some sort of trouble, don't do it

Magnet Hack:

Buy one with a hole in it.
Slide magnet over screwdriver
Super magnetized screwdriver

Yep. I mounted one of those to a 1" dowel and went magnet fishing. Can find some crazy shit in a river, no guns yet though.

I lost the fingertips from more than a few pairs of gloves when I worked in aerospace.

We used a lot of neos.

Really good at raising blood blisters if you get them on opposite sides of the skin web between your thumb and index finger. Awesome acceleration when they come together unexpectedly.
