I was out back with my dad and my brothers when one of my brothers said holy crap! Your neighbor's house is on fire! I came out of the barn and sure enough it was and it was big already.  We were the first ones on the scene but could hear the sirens coming.  We went running over there as I was calling my neighbor to make sure nobody was in the house.  I was pretty sure he had just moved out as he was renting the place and I knew he was moving and hadn't seen him or his kids in a couple of weeks.  He confirmed that and said nobody and no pets were there.  By the time we got there, we knew it is was goner and about 30 trucks showed up from 4 or 5 departments.  They pretty much just did a controlled burn and let it go. They kept the big barn next to the house wet because the sparks were blowing right over it, and they kept that from igniting.  I was pretty impressed with the response from the various departments and they brought everything including a big ladder truck.  Lots of other neighbors showed up to watch because it was quite a show.  A couple of crews are still out there right now but for the most part it is out.

If I was cynical, I would say an irate evictee or impoverish landlord.

If I was cynical.

Wow. I haven't seen one like that in a while. I'm glad that no one got hurt.

don't think I didn't have the same thought. I know it wasn't my ex neighbor though. He had been planning to move for a while and would have had nothing to gain.  Not sure about the landlord, but I know the neighbor never had any ill will towards him/them.

Neighbors house went up like that at 2am 3 years ago. It was a rental and they were in the process of remodeling it when a heater caught fire. Response pissed me off so bad I wound up moving. Lived about 1-1/2 blocks from the fire department in town. Trucks responded from two different towns with the closest being 25 miles away before the first truck rolled out of the local fire department. Obviously it went down to the slab.

No doubt about it, it was crazy how big it got and the speed with which it happened...it got consumed in mere minutes.

I just went back over to have a look now that it is over and had a nice conversation with the remaining chief.  His crew is my local department and is still on site killing hot spots. I had counted 5 departments, but it turned out there were 8. They came from all over the place.

8 departments for one house fire?

Must have been a slow night...

Did you read the part where he was a renter and had already vacated the residence?

I thought the same thing, but the original call came from a cell phone passerby and went to the wrong department initially.  But all the other area departments heard about it and they responded too.  I am guessing (like you) that they knew it was the real deal and everybody wanted to go. And boy did they.

I feel sorry for your neighbor.  On the other hand, I have seen some absolutley amazing houses that were formerly barns.  If his barn is conducive to that, it could be a very nice opportunity.

The barn is a pretty nice old barn and it is big, but not really good enough that I'd build a house out of it. That being said, there is a lot of nice land on the property too and it is next door to me and I've always entertained the idea of buying a chunk of it from the owner. Not sure where his head will be after this though.

After he collects the insurance money he'll be ready to sell you the whole thing.

Says two minutes, but imagine if you've just woken up and walked out to see what the noise is all about.
Then think about your waking the family and trying to get out of the house.

Is there any possibility of involvement with a meth lab?

Just asking.  Meth labs tend to burn down rather easily.

the frequency is inversely proportional to the amount of equity that the owner has in the place

Rule of thumb: If the guns, dogs, big screen TV and family mementos survived the fire, it was arson.

A little known fact is that a uninhabited house is not covered under your homeowners policy in a lot of states.

Not like he went on vacation, it's covered then.

If you move out you need to notify your carrier and add the extra coverage for uninhabited home.

Edited to add:

If the landlord has tenant   coverage he should be alright.
