Nice pictures. Watch it takeoff if you get the chance. I got to watch it takeoff once while I was stationed at Edwards, damn is it something to see.

Here a picture as it was leaving Edwards on the 19th.

When it's flying like that, is the shuttle 'flying' too? I mean, is the jumbo holding it up or is it providing its own lift?

The shuttle is a glider and must be hauled back on a 747 from CA to FL. The shuttle is not an airplane and can not produce lift on its own, so they can't fly the shuttle back to FL it must be flown back via 747.

yes and no .... It must be hauled back due not having any type of engine that can be effecianetly run in the atmosphere for normal flight. But, the shuttle wings, do produce lift, otherwise it would fall out of the sky like a rock. They don't produce much lift at relatively slower speeds, but they do produce lift. Your answer is basically correct because at the speeds the 747 is flying, I doubt the shuttle wings are producing enough lift to help out much. The lift comes from a high angle of attack, as you can see, they have the shuttle positioned on the 747 at a nose-high position. Who knows, it may be helping the 747 fly a little bit.

You misunderstood my question.

In the configuration pictured above, is the shuttle providing it's own lift? Gliders produce their own lift BTW.

the 747 is hauling a big brick.
nothing more.

that's how I understand it too. there's gravel in the 747 for ballast or whatever it'd be called in a plane.
