Hello guys, I've been attempting to build some steel reaction targets for 50 to 200
yard AR15 blasting, and it seems that everything we were using is getting shot to
hell and full of holes. I tried a 1/2" plate over the weekend, and after about 25 to
30 hits, we were punching right through. So could anyone please tell me the correct
hardness that I should be using to prevent such obsessive damage to my targets
thanks guys.

Try 3"

Well I do know that if you go to hard that the material will become brittle and shatter if it were to be hit with a bullet.

Are the plates free hanging or are they mounted in a rigid manner? I think that energy dissipation/deflection could play a major role in the material you would need.

Then what are some of you using?

I have them swinging from steel sawhorses ( The heavy duty folding ones you
would find at Lowe's)

Go to your local steel supply house and ask for AR400.
Sometimes goes by the trade name Hardox.
3/4" thick should be good forever.

+1 Have it plasma or water jet cut to the shapes you want.

What you want is toughness not hardness. try some 3/4" Hastalloy or Haynes 242. expensive but it will last. don't bother trying to cut it either. you will look like this
