I need some advice from some of you experiences flat top/optic AR-15 types-

I am thinking of building an A3 upper/20in barrel variant but am curious how the optics (Aimpoint ML2 type) would line up hieght wise with standard mounts. I am thinking of the non-urban/non-building clearing role for this config, so LR (200m +) is more probable, think "designated marksman". I'd want to keep the normal front sight and base. Below are some questions and any advice or input is grealy appreciated. Thanks-

> A3 with 20in barrel with standard Aimpoint and mount? Work fine? Or do I need a "riser block"? Will a rear flip up sight (YHM ST1000 type) get in the way of the AimpointML2?

> A2 upper with barrel with same optics/mounts? Too high of a mount?

> Will the front sight obstruct the view in any manner in any optic config (A2 vs A3)?

> Is the ML2 a worthwhile investment, or should I step up a notch or two?

Thanks a many.

ACOG is the only way to fly out past 100 yards

If you want to be shooting at ranges of 200 + you might want to consider an optic beyond an aimpoint is my advice. Some of the low-magnification ones, like the ACOG and ELCAN can be very useful in intermediate roles, where you don't want to limit yourself too much with a high-power scope, but want a little more long-range precision than a red dot can provide.

Just my 2 cents. Different things work for different people.

I want to avoid the high powered hunting scope look. I thought about the Elcan set up, but have yet to research the feedback on them. At most, I am thinking of a 3X or 4X, but after firing a number of rounds through a friends A2 AR-15 with a BSA red dot sight out to 200m with good success, I'd figured higher quality optics (Aimpoint ML2, etc) would serve the trick just fine.

So... when not in use, a folded BUIS on an A3 isnt going to interfere with the use of the low mounted optics in any way. Correct?

I have an older ELCAN on my 20" A-R, going on two yrs. now. No plans to take it off, i shot it out to 600 yds. At 200 yds. you can wear off all the paint on pepper poppers. Great optics, clear as they come at any distance. It has the pointed post and is good on the bench shooting groups, but very fast when you need it.I got it for a carbine, but it was too heavy, just right on a 20 " rifle.

I would not go with non-magnified optics on a 20".

For non-magnified optics, a 14.5" or 16" barrel is plenty

For a 20", I prefer the gov't profile for lighter weight. ACOG, compact ACOG, IOR M2, or other scopes would be of interest

I put a Eotech on my 20" flat top and am very satisfied with it.

Can anyone suggest a place where I can find an Elcan to buy? I did a search and came up dry.

These guys (riflescopes.com - formerly SWFA.com I think) carry them:

Wow - check out the $13,000 thermal sight

Does anyone have a picture of an A3 with a Aimpoint ML2 w/ the high mount on top?

I am curious if the height the extended mount is enough to shoot comfortably.

Not sure if this is what you mean or not - by "high mount" do you mean the extended spacer?

If so, here's my Fulton with said set-up... shoots very comfortably and co-witnesses almost perfectly with the ARMS 40

Thanks for the pic. I was actually looking at that exact set up.

you could always get a 3x magnifier for your red dot

Im not real keen on that set up but lots of people seem to like them
