He has several hundred rounds of 7.62 NATO A VN Vet with M14 experience but no rifle. He can only afford $300-$500. I would reccomend an FAL or a CETME. But I'm aware that some of these are problematic.(The Budget versions) I am on the verge of telling him to get an AK\SAR 1,2 and some Wolf ammo. That would put him in his price range. Any suggestions? Personal experiences? TIA Del

This is a link to the photo of my Klinton Sporter L1A1 (Thumbhole stock that everyone loves to hate). They're going for around $400-500. Whatever I did when I scanned it, it comes out on the screen as HUGE. http://wsphotofews.excite.com/023/gZ/zz/kg/Ba54033.jpg

How about a bolt gun? Wally-Mart sells a slick Savage 110 package gun that includes an inexpensive scope. The deal sells for 399.99 last time I checked. The 110s won't win any beauty contests, but many people will confirm that they are shooters.

The Savage Scout might be his ticket.

Look for a Norinco or Polytech M-14 Sporter. I have had mine for 10 years, no problems, and it has taken its share of Elk.

Go with the Chinese M-14. You can find them for around $400.00-$500.00. Let the uninformed slam them. Those who know, know they have the best receivers available to the average Joe.

If you come across any Chicom M-14s for $500 or less, let me know. I'll buy them. The cheapest I've seen in the last two years has been $600 and they get snapped up very quickly. If he doesn't want to go with the Savage 110, check out the current CAI StG-58 clone FAL. Reports on the FAL Files seem to indicate that CAI seems to have gotten their act together and the only consistent change the rifles seem to need is a new, one-piece gas piston ($49 from DSA, $19 from TAPCO). They're available for $495 from SOG.

Hey, If my trade on GlockTalk falls through I'll have a CIA CETME available for sale. I picked it up this Spring and it doesn't seem to have any of the associated problems I've been hearing about. I've put about 400 different makes of .308 through it without a hitch. I also have 12 mags for it.

How are those Siaga (sp?) .308 Russian sniper rifles. I've seen a few in the $500-$600 range complete with scope.

Thanks for the Ideas, Please give me some links. I have been searching and have seen that almost everybody is sold out of stock. Aim only showing the SAR 2 in stock. I would love to find a couple Polytechs for $500. As was stated, these disapear almost as fast as they arive. I also thought about the Savage rifles. They are great for the $'s. Saw 1 at the range yesterday and the owner was smiling while shooting. (good sign) The Spanih Mauser is a great rifle, If you can find one. Thanks all. If anyone has a link, Please insert in your reply. Del

No Big5s in your part of the country? Here in CA, they have the Spanish FR8s for ~$189. Would love to have a Polytech receiver, but I haven't seen any for less than $600 on the net. Good luck!

How about the #2 Enfield.Should be able to pic one up for about 125.Then he can save for a semi.SOG has a H&K contract rifle for 595.oo with 2 mags If he does go with the scout order a 10F or 10FL if hes a lefty. Then get a Ashley mount and peep sights.Much sturdier then Savages mount.Cheaper too.
