I came home from a trip to find a cockroach upside down in my dining room, evidently bled out with black shit smeared all around him.

I flipped him over and it looked like he had a little bite taken out of his abdomen.  Hardy little fucker was still trying to move.

What would do this to a cockroach?

We've got a lot of wolf spiders and geckos around here, too, but I didn't figure either one of those could or would do that to a roach.

Anyone with some entomological wisdom care to chime in on this?

A rat will eat a cockroach if hungry enough.

They can survive a nuclear winter, but not these

Cockroaches have many natural predators, including toads, frogs,
beetles, geckos and iguanas. Some parasitic wasp species are safe for
humans but are effective exterminators of roach populations. These
species lay their eggs inside the egg cases of cockroaches; hatchlings
feed upon nearby cockroach eggs. Entomopathogenic fungi have also been
identified as effective means of roach control, as their spores attach
to insects and kill them within weeks. Cockroaches affected by fungi
then pass the parasite on to other cockroaches.

In layman terms that means roach AIDS.

I watched a small lizard take a roach in my back yard one day. But since I fired my bug guy and started doing my own pest control, roaches are a thing of the past.

Lizards just eat the fuckers, they don't gut them.

I'd guess a rodent.

Liberal application of chemicals...

Nothing seems to eat them in Florida - I think they're top of the food chain.
