I'm glad I don't live in NYC...Nice job Bloomberg!  Keep up with your anti-gun crusade and we'll see how that goes.
Incompetent police commissioner, even let the thug punching the car window go...stating he was trying to help the wife and kids.

Say,  Wouldn't pulling the fellow biker away from the SUV be more helpful?  I don't see how punching car window would help...

Hi suntex01, welcome to arfcom.
The response times for the west side hwy are pretty slow. I live several blocks south of where the initial collision occurred. My living room and terrace face the highway, and I often hear collisions late at night (mostly weekends, i.e. drunks), look out the window and call 911. It usually take 10 min. or so before emergency vehicles start showing up. And thats late at night, with almost no cars on the road.

Regarding the biker who punched the driver's side rear window, it has been suggested here that he probably rolled on his buddies in exchange for not being charged.

As for "trying to help", I believe you are talking about the atty for the guy who got paralyzed, Jay MeeZee, she claimed he was trying to help the downed biker at the orig. collision scene, not trying to assault Mr. Lien. Mr. MeeZee has a criminal record going back 20 years, (he's only 30-something, IIRC) so I'd take that with a grain of salt.

Also, Mr helmet-smash, Reginald Chance, just turned himself in to the 33rd pct.

Cops had already received calls about the group and made arrests earlier that day. They also seized 55 bikes that day.

It just seems so obvious that, if you hang out w/ dudes like this, and SHTF, even if you're totally innocent of any wrong-doing, your name is still gonna get dragged through the papers. It just seems like a really Bad Idea to expose yourself to that kind of scrutiny unnecessarily.

I love this part:

Yea riiiiight asshole.

If he was really an undercover cop on duty, as one would be in such a situation, then he should of intervened.  But I am going to guess he wasn't.

I meant that they didn't get involved. NYPD doesn't have the best track record for how it treats officers who get involved off-duty. They shouldn't be surprised that the cops didn't help.

The waiting 3 days part and not calling 911 is what will sink him. Just like the cops in the Paul Heidelberger incident years ago.

Doesn't it seem like a bad idea to be doing that kind of thing in the first place?  I mean, specially, a badder idea on a bad idea as a police officer?

There's no moral turpitude clauses?  They can be hookers, drunks, drug users, child pornographers in their spare time as long as it's off duty?

While I'd say they probably didn't commit a crime.  The NYPD doesn't need THIS type of shit slung on them when they were already well covered in regular mud over the incident.

5 off-duty officers among bikers in SUV incident

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Eyewitness News has learned that among the bikers on the Henry Hudson last weekend, were five off-duty NYPD officers.

Sources say at least two detectives witnessed the attack on Alexian Lien and did not directly intervene. And investigators are still working to determine what role, if any, was played by the other three officers.
View Quote

And detectives are also investigating reports that several others in the group may have been off-duty New York City correction officers.

Off-duty NYPD cop drunk when his SUV kills pedestrian on Staten Island, police say

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- An off-duty cop who authorities say mowed down a pedestrian in Mariners Harbor in his SUV Friday morning faces charges of second-degree vehicular manslaughter and drunken driving.

Officer Joseph McClean, 29, of South Beach, assigned to the 121st Precinct, was arraigned Friday afternoon in Stapleton Criminal Court.

The officer traveled a few more feet before stopping the car; he fled the scene in his vehicle but returned within a half-hour, the source said.

According to the source, McClean told police, "I'm coming from my girl's place."

When police asked him if he had been drinking, McClean responded, "I'm not talking about that without my [PBA] rep," the source said.

Considering that a cop I worked with caught shit from the department for stopping an attempted double homicide off-duty, I know how I'd handle it

Jesus fuck.
Really?
I've seen off-duty NYPD cops lauded in the news, though. A couple of yrs ago a female officer stopped a robbery at a hair salon by shooting the gun out of the perp's hand, in Queens, I think?
More recently an off-duty officer tried to stop a mugging, got shot, and killed at least 1 bad guy. He got promoted to detective while still in the hospital, IIRC.

Wow.  Not much difference between the cops and the criminals in NYC it seems.

Who would of thought that would happen when you have the lowest standards.

Chances that they are inkies? 100%?

Most likely.

"Not choosing to engage" is not the same as chasing a man down at 100mph with a gang of felons. How do you think he got to the scene of the assault? He was part of the wolf pack.

It's been explained what happens to off duty NYPD officers if they choose to engage.  Saving the driver from serious injury would be irrelevant, he would have exposed the city to liability by taking unauthorized action against the highwaymen.

They Used to Call that "Malfeasance" in the Olden Days.
(failing to act when action is required as per one's Oath of Office)

Yeah the guy I worked with was lauded in the news too when behind the scenes the department wanted to fuck him.
Btw, that incident with the female cop happened in my precinct and the story told in the news was nowhere near reality.

You expect more from the dept. with the lowest standards and hiring practices in the area?

It's in the archived threads somewhere. Best part was when a member here stated I didn't know what I was talking about and I then had to inform him that I was on scene for the incident.

Huh? Shouldn't it read "off duty NYPD?"
I thought MOS were told not to get involved and be a good witness when off duty.

Cops have told me they're never really off duty.

NYPD cops?

Several, yes.
But also cops in general.

Those NYPD cops must have been good friends with this guy.
