Fairfax, Virginia - Founded in 1871, the National Rifle Association set out to train civilians in the use of military arms so patriotic citizens would be fully prepared to defend our country in times of war and national crisis. We realized early on that the best method for encouraging marksmanship practice was through America's competitive spirit, leading to the creation of NRA Competitive Shooting.

Competitive shooting remains a fundamental business of the NRA and a core service to our members, acting not only as the basis for all safety and marksmanship training, but providing Americans an opportunity to safely exercise their Second Amendment right.

The NRA owes so much of its success in protecting the rights of law-abiding citizens to the clubs and associations who affiliate themselves with the organization, many of which are competitive shooting clubs.

We remain committed to the success and longevity of the shooting sports and the NRA Board of Directors has recently written a resolution pledging to continue supporting the competitive shooting community, ensuring the NRA is recognized throughout the free world as America's official representative to the International Shooting Community.
