I don't know about other states, but here in NC the NRA has a history of endorsing canidates who are actually bad for US, especially incumbents, based not on thier voting history but on thier platforms and statements.
Here are some examples, the star ratings are the ones given out by Grass Roots NC, a very effective state firearms righst group, compare them to the ratings teh NRA gave. GRNC tracks each canidates record very closely.
[red]NRA SQUANDERS AN OPPORTUNITY
While we've become accustomed to a certain amount of "grade inflation" in
NRA ratings for incumbents, ratings released this year and reprinted in
"State Shots," the newsletter of the NRA-affiliated NC Rifle & Pistol
Assoc. appear to reflect a very bad deal in the Senate.
Last year, the NRA attempted to pass a gun litigation bill, SB 680, through
the anti-gun NC Senate by tacking on gun show restrictions. When GRNC
blocked SB 680, it forced the Senate to adopt a CLEAN litigation bill in
the form of HB 622.
Unfortunately, it appears the NRA made a pact with the devil in passing HB
622. Particularly in the Senate, strongly anti-gun Democrats have received
NRA "A" ratings and endorsements. Among the most egregious:
NCS-40: PITTENGER (R, ****) vs. ODOM (D, 0-star). Last year, Odom sponsored
a bill containing gun show restrictions. In 1995, he chaired a
subcommittee that tried to gut concealed carry. In 1998, he sponsored
legislation allowing merchants to remain free of liability while posting
against concealed carry. Despite all, however, the NRA has endorsed him
again anyway. Worse, redistricting has made Odom vulnerable, giving gun
rights supporters a once-in-ten-years opportunity to elect pro-gun Robert
Pittenger to the Senate. Not only has the NRA endorsed Odom, they sent
postcards for him into the district, reportedly after being threatened by
anti-gun Senate President Pro Tem MARC BASNIGHT.
NCS-27: MCDANIEL (R, ****) VS. HAGAN (D, 0-star). Although NRA give
McDaniel a much deserved "A" rating, they failed to endorse him over Hagan.
Bear in mind Hagan has been blocking all pro-gun legislation by denying
bills committee hearings, while McDaniel shepherded our original concealed
handgun bill through the Senate.
NCS-07: RUSSELL (R, ****) vs. KERR (D, *). Although Kerr has only a 58%
pro-gun voting record, and voted no less than 4 times AGAINST stripping gun
show restrictions out of SB 680, the NRA endorsed him over Russell. Worse,
this is a winnable district for Russell.
NCS-49: CLARK (R, ****) vs. METCALF (D, 0-star). Here Metcalf has only a
20% pro-gun voting record, also voting 4 times AGAINST stripping gun show
restrictions out of SB 680.
ELSEWHERE: In NCS-10, the NRA endorsed ALBERTSON (D, 50% voting record,
GRNC 0-star) over WILSON (R, ***); in NCS-43, they endorsed HOYLE (D, **)
over HARRINGTON (R, ****); in NCS-46, they endorsed DALTON (D, 0-star) over
WEATHERLY (R, ****) even though Weatherly has a 100% voting record while
Dalton's is only 25% (redistricting has pitted two incumbents against each
These are but the worst examples. There are plenty of others. Gun rights
supporters are advised to voice objections to the NRA, and to use GRNC
candidate evaluations available at www.grnc.org

Do they screw things up this bad in your state too?
