Renewed my annual membership today and was looking at their no-cost accidental death life insurance.  Free is good, but they ask for my social security number.  Any reason I should be hesitant about giving my SSN to the NRA?

I "activated" my insurance a few years ago and I do not remember any requirement or even request for a social security number.

eta: I don't see it online either but I would leave it blank and fill out the rest.

I'm going to have to look into this. I'm a life member, and don't recall this. Same for my father.... he's a life member....and I don't know if he ever set it up.

It's most likely not required by the NRA or even the Life company backing them up, but by the banking laws. If your getting $ from an insurance company, they must know you are a "real" person. The tool used is your SSN #.

I would guess that because it is Life of Duty they either use a different insurance carrier and/or they need to verify you are actually military so they are not covering people who don't qualify.
