Looks like things are starting to heat up a bit in the far east.
NHK - 8 Chinese ships enter Senkaku waters Japanese coast guard patrollers say 8 Chinese government ships have entered Japan's territorial waters off the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea.
The presence of 8 Chinese vessels is the largest since Japan nationalized the islands last September. China and Taiwan also claim them. Japanese patrollers say the 8 Chinese maritime surveillance vessels entered the territorial waters between around 7:30 and 8 A.M. on Tuesday. They say 3 of them had briefly entered the waters the previous night. In the morning, they returned from just outside the zone with the 5 other ships. The Coast Guard is warning them to leave. Coast guard officers say 2 Chinese fisheries patrol vessels are navigating just outside the territorial waters as well. They say 9 Japanese fishing boats are also in the area around the Senkakus. The boats are reportedly carrying dozens of regional lawmakers and members of the foreign media. China's State Oceanic Administration says on its website that the 8 surveillance ships are monitoring the activities of many Japanese vessels spotted off the islands. Nothing new, really. Japan knows that when their leaders visit that shrine, they can expect a response from people in the rest of Asia.
Japan war shrine visits anger China, South Korea
TOKYO (AP) - Dozens of Japanese lawmakers paid homage at a national war shrine on Tuesday morning, risking more anger from neighbours South Korea and China over visits they see as failures to acknowledge Japan's militaristic past. The lawmakers from various parties were seen making offerings to mark the spring festival at Yasukuni Shrine, which honours Japan's war dead, including World War II leaders convicted of war crimes. Japanese media said 168 lawmakers paid the visits, which follow donations to the shrine by the prime minister and visits by three Cabinet ministers over the weekend. The government said those visits were made in an unofficial capacity, but China and South Korea lodged protests. Yasukuni's compound has a war museum that glorifies Japan's wartime past. The site is a focus of nationalist pride among Japanese conservatives and right-wingers. Link to Article Japan Shrine Visits Further Strain Ties Frayed by Island Dispute A group of Japanese lawmakers visited a shrine seen in Asia as a symbol of the country’s wartime aggression, fanning regional tensions as eight Chinese patrol boats approached islands claimed by both countries. The 169 lawmakers visited the Yasukuni Shrine today as part of the site’s spring festival, Kyodo news agency said, citing a statement from the group. It was the largest gathering of politicians to visit since records of such trips were first kept in 1989, and comes after China and South Korea complained about a visit last weekend by Finance Minister Taro Aso. Most of people in US have no clue how Japanese are despised in many parts of SE Asia. The issue is viewed only through view point of Cold War in US
Japanese government, especially the current ruling party, needs to watch what they do and say. They are nationalists who deny Japan's atrocity in WW2 and do not want to learn from the past. Someone posted the news already, but their cabinet members paid respect at Yasukuni shrine, which is for their shrine for war criminals. The way the current and past cabinet members tries to avoid the controversy is to claim that they were there as an individual, not as a public figure. BS. It's essentially giving a finger to their victims. And Japan expects to be respected from their neighbors? I'm hearing that recently, Abe Shinzo's second man went to Korea as an envoy but seemed like he thought he can tell Korean president what Korea should do. Not a good diplomatic work there. Chinese(mainland) are not the angels of SE Asia, but Japan is no better. |

Yes, of course they're more fascist than Communist, but there's little to nothing capitalist about them. Regardless, your comparison is assinine, and the Japanese aren't invading anybody. They have no offensive military, their Constitution explicitly forbids it. The Senkaku island issue is the Chinese attempting to make trouble over something they do not own. And Japan is still our ally. |

And Japan is still our ally. I don't think you understand the economic meaning of capitalism and communism. They pretty much abandoned it a few decades ago. Japan doesn't invade anybody because their neighbors keep an eye on them. After getting their ass handed to them they realized that it is not a good idea to act like they are the center of SE Asia. However, there has been attempts to amend that part of constitution by nationalists for quite a while now. Senkaku island dispute is just that China being a troll. But Japan has done its share of problematic stuff(recent visit to yasukuni shrine being an example) and this recent one seems to be an extention of that. Japan is an ally, but that doesn't mean it should come at the cost of other nations near it and end up being a net negative. At this point, there is no indication that they are a net negative influence in SE Asian region, but if Abe's cabinet keeps it up, this could be another headache. Quoted:

Someone posted the news already, but their cabinet members paid respect at Yasukuni shrine, which is for their shrine for war criminals. Let's get a little perspective shall we? Yasukini shrine was founded in 1867 by Emperor Meiji and currently contains the enshrined remains of almost TWO AND A HALF MILLION people, not all of whom were war veterans. Out of those 2.5 MILLION people, a little under 1100 of them are convicted war criminals. Yasukuni is not a shrine dedicated to war criminals, it is a shrine dedicated to people who died in service to their country. Most of them were war veterans but many of them were civilians. Only a tiny fraction of 1% of the people who's remains are enshrined at Yasukuni are convicted war criminals. What about the other 99.999% of the people enshrined at Yasukuni, the ones who are NOT war criminals? |
