Cardinals strong safety Pat Tillman is making a decision that could cost him millions of dollars. But his reason for leaving the NFL is priceless: He wants to defend his country.
Tillman, a former Arizona State star, told Cardinals coaches and owner Bill Bidwill Wednesday that he plans to join the Army and wants to be a Ranger. He has taken the Army physical, is expected to sign enlistment papers next week and should enter boot camp at the end of the month.
Tillmann, 25, and his younger brother, Kevin, are joining together, and Tillman reportedly hopes to resume his NFL career after the three-year commitment.
"This is very serious with Pat," Cardinals coach Dave McGinnis said. "It's not just a snap decision. You're not dealing with a guy who's real shallow. You're dealing with a guy whose waters run pretty deep."
Very deep indeed.
You're a better man than I Mr. Tillman.
You are to be commended.
