OH MY GOD, its the weird guy at the gunshow who was telling me about his Sniper SKS With The Rare Russian Scope... he really IS an "operator" for the Ossetian special forces!

But seriously, wtf? Please tell me that guy is an observer only and isn't being counted on to fire accurate shots into a hostage filled environment with that thing. Even the wooden stocked Saiga is better than trying to use an SKS for a sniper's weapon!

It's not like post count matters worth a damn. Hell I've been coming here for 4 years now and I only recently broke 1000.

On topic, I never realized how many countries use the M16/AR15 series of weapons until I started viewing these threads.

BESLAN, RUSSIA - SEPTEMBER 2: A Russian soldier feels the strain of crisis during a siege around the school where some 350 hostages, most of them women and children, are being held by suspected Chechen militants on September 2, 2004, one day after the drama began in Belsan, Russia.. The terrorist attack in the southern Russian region of North Ossetia, near war-ravaged Chechnya in the Caucasus, was the third to hit Russia in eight days, raising questions about President Vladimir Putin's hardline Chechnya policy. It's a Saiga rifle. They put a more classic hunting stock on the AK and sell it to the civilian market.

Dude, a good SKS can do 2" at 100 yards with decent sights or a scope. It's not going to have the range capabilities of the Dragunov or a rifle firing a full power rifle cartridge, but in this standoff, I bet they're probably not more than 50 yards from the school. The SKS would be a decent weapon, IMHO.

While a scoped Saiga is a better weapon for accuracy (especially in 5.56, 5.45, or .308), we're looking at ranges of less than 150 yards here. With a scope and a steady hand, the SKS would be more than adequate. In fact, reading Mironov's account of Grozny, we learn that a single Chechen sniper with a scoped SKS killed over 30 Russian soldiers.
