Good on you OP.

Take them early and often, you won't find better people with kids than grandparents and supervised great grandparents.

He trained in a stearman, then he flew a different plane, spotting for naval artillery in the Mediterranean. He said they got hit hard and so got trained to fly P-51s to be able to defend themselves. I don't think it was carrier borne. I'm not sure exactly where he flew from but I understand most of his time to be in the Mediterranean and he mostly was a naval artillery spotter. He described most of his time as being in an unarmed aircraft which sounds terrifying to me, in a war zone.

I read your title wrong a few times. I thought it said that it was a picture of your youngest son with his great grandson.

You sir are a lucky man to be able to see that and live it with your son. I only hope that I can be around like that to see my great grandchildren!

Very common outfit from that era that you don't see being worn anymore. My grandfather wore those same type clothes every day except for church, weddings, and funerals (died 30 years ago).

First thing I thought was he's a cool looking grandpa.

That's great. My wife's family now has five living generations with the birth of our grandson two months ago. From newborn to age 98.

I was just thinking the same thing, except my Grandpa liked the green ones..lol. He'd be 100 if he were still alive.

I had girls and not sons, but was still awed by my grandfather gazing at my oldest daughter (on of his oldest great grand children) during a family Christmas party several years ago. She was napping in her crib in an adjacent room, and I got up to do something and wandered by and just saw him standing there and watching her sleep. I walked up to him and asked him what he thought. I'll never forget what he said..."she's perfect."

Like your grandfather, mine was a WWII veteran. It meant a lot to me (getting dusty just typing this) for him to say that. I hope she earns that compliment when she grows up as an adult. I can only hope that he was thinking that his sacrifice all those years ago was worth it to see yet another generation born into freedoms and opportunity that most in this world can only dream about.

OP great family picture, also think about recording your grandfathers war experiences. Maybe a video project living history.
Your grandfather gets A big old, thank you from all America, even if they don't know what they owe him?

Holy shit, your granddad is Wilford Brimley!

Link Posted: 10/22/2016 12:52:04 AM EDT
Great photograph!

Thanks for posting it. My Grandfather's were both WW2 veterans and aren't with us anymore. I'm still in awe of people from that generation.
