So the wife wants a small lap dog. I have been thinking about getting her one for Christmas.
Anyone have any suggestions for a good breed? |

How small?
My mom has a Yorkshire Terrier that is tiny. He's 7 and only like 5lbs. He's a little shit, but he's fun to play with sometimes. |

West Highland White Terrier, had one, great dog, territorial/feisty
Jack Russel if you can stand it, heard they are very energetic Beagle if you can stand it, heard they smell, wander around, and bark a lot |
|
great pyrenees. Or at least he thought he was a lap dog. Bear always was a bit off...
All the small dogs I've had have been way neurotic and not worth having (my mom thought they were great, what does that tell you?). All Rat Terriers.

I have great luck with rat terriers
they are pretty small but still big enough not to be fragile cowering things all of mine got to about 10-15Lbs and were fat bastards |

Got my MIL a Yorkshire Terrier for her birthday. Dog is hyper as hell but over all a good pup.

My mom (RIP) wanted a little Yorkshire Terrier.
Nothing against Yorkies, but they were never my cup of tea. My Dad's neither. My dad got her a Brittany Spaniel instead. That Brit, April was one of the best dogs ever. My theory: All puppies are cute. She will fall in love with what ever puppy you get her. |

I know nothing about small breeds, but from appearance alone, I like mini pinchers and long hair chihuahua's.

Small dogs suck. If my wife said she was getting a small dog again, I would move out.

Toy Poodle. They are extremely smart, loyal, and loving. They learn quick and can be taught to not be yappy.

Got my wife a Yorkie-poo for her Birthday a couple years ago.
The dog is undeniably the best lap/house dog I have ever been blessed with would buy another without regret instantly |

fail fail fail fail fail
the only logical answer when your wife asks for a dog is "I'll give you a wiener" |

I had been a large dog guy...until I got my current two small and smaller dogs. Miniature Pincher, and a Chihuahua. The Min Pin is a good dog, in that he is still big enough to intimidate, and he is fiercely loyal. But not the smartest of dogs...he is lovably stupid.
The Chihuahua, on the other hand, is also very loyal, but not aggressive. He will alert you to 'something amiss', but after that, its up to you. However, he makes up for it with his intelligence. Very smart and social. Keenly aware of the social order. I was training the Min Pin, and after a while, the chihuahua came in and did the trick as if to say "like this, you idiot" Best feature, their crap is small enough that it just disappears into the yard. I only have to buy a large bag of food every 6 weeks or so. Good luck! |

Yorkshire Terrier. Fun, smart, obstinate, and think they are a lot bigger than they are. It is really hard looking like a tough guy walking one, but having a wife and kids took the starch out of my sails a long time ago.

Quoted: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. My girlfriend's sister has one of these. It's a nice dog and very playful, but I just can't seem to understand dropping $1200 on a small lap dog. |
|
Irish wolfhound.
Sorry, couldn't resist....Think of it as a free bump. |
|
Quoted: Miniature schnauzer. I have 2 mini schnoozers. Very affectionate. No shedding or allergy problems. Cool personalities. |

Pug.....they are hilarious. I used to have a narcoleptic pug, he was awesome. Now I have a normal healthy pug. He's an attention whore, but fun. I would say go pug. |
|
JRT...................loyal, loving, smart, and will attack a 200lb guy if he is threat. My female it around 14-15lbs

I have a Maltese. He was a pre-rescue kinda of deal - he was headed for a shelter when I finally broke down and agreed to take him. He likes to be in the same room with me, but doesn't demand a lot of attention. Never barks unless someone comes down the driveway. He a territorial thing though; I can't decide whether he suicidally brave or incredibly stupid, but he's chased dogs three times his size out of the yard.

Bedlington Terrier. Your wife will absolutely love the dog (and you for getting one). Only a few breeders in the US. Google Bedlington terrier club of America. If you're really interested, IM me. I don't sell them, breed them or anything else, but I can tell you the best breeders. They are very cool dogs.

that's a cat dude |

Buy a Rottweiler.
Tell her you thought she meant small compared to a horse. The Rott can thereby be proven to be small, and you don't have to worry about stepping on it or accidentally losing it down the drain. win-win

Another vote here for the Miniature Dachshund. never thought of myself as a small dog kinda guy, but that's OK, nobody ever told my Dachshunds that they were small. Very sweet dogs with a ton of personalty. They are a hundred pound dog in a ten pound body.

His only problem was he wasn't as big as his personality and it got him in trouble with bigger dogs. This dog would not back down from a bull or a horse either. Not a girly type dog as most small dogs are. |
