Just something I came up with. I am not agreeing with it, just thinking about W's motives.

Nominate Roberts - Not a big paper trail, but brilliant, likely a stealth conservative at the least, maybe a very conservative justice in the mold of a Rehnquist.

Nominate Miers - Not a big paper trail, knows her very, very well. Despite what he says, he knows how she will rule. She appears to be pro 2A. Many more, harder to confirm conservative justices out there.

Why would he do this? The Dems have not created as big a stink as we thought they would, and we may very well have shifted the court to the right "stealthfully" with the 2 picks.

The payoff??? Now the 80 plus year old John Paul Stevens might not be so scared to step down and let W pick his succesor. W then picks a very conservative Luddig or Brown or what have you, and the battle royale happens on the last possible pick. If he made pick #2 a Luddig or Brown then #3 might very well not come along.
