A Ruger SP101 .38 special:

I'm getting a hogue grip for it and I also need to get a Wilson Combat hammer spring kit (the DA trigger pull is terrible), but I needed something smaller to carry off duty. It's not very light, but in order to carry (even off-duty) I need to qualify with my PD. I've heard this has less recoil than a S & W Airweight revolver with +P ammo so hopefully it'll be easier for me to qualify at 18 yards. Anyone else had any experience with these? I've always been a revolver girl

BTW - there are no gun ranges that offer rentals in my state

I had a 357 one with the 3inch barrel and bought my mom the same set-up you have for personal protection (yes, she knows how to shoot). They shoot good. Besides what you have already mentioned, I would get some snap-caps and practice your double action trigger pull alot with it. This is something you can do at home while focusing on an object. It will really help in improve your scores for qualification.

Nice purchase, good luck.

Nice toy.  Excellent choice for a snubby.  My next snubby will probably be an SP101.

Let us know how it handles after you take it to the range! I haven't played with one of those yet and am trying to decide what handgun to get.
Right now I am at the "one of everything" part of picking which one.

SP101 is an absolutely GREAT gun..... have had several in 357 over the years.

should be very accurate and absolutely reliable. you should have no trouble qualifying with it.
