Well, new to me anyway. Not bad for just going into the gun shop to get ammo for the AR! I paid $112.00 for the rifle, a brush and 60 rounds. I don't know how much it's really worth, but for me the cool factor of a 1946 Russian 7.62x54 is worth it. It looks brand new, too. I took it apart, cleaned it and plan on shooting it tomorrow. I can't wait!

Nice looking rifle! You will of course update with a range report tomorrow when you get back...right?

Nice

Been thinking about getting one of those.

I love mine. I bought a couple hundred rounds of the Czech surplus ammo and had some split cases and now i really eyeball eack round after taking it after the wrapper. They are great little fun guns. Mine is not all that accurate but it kicks like a 12 gauge and has a tremendous muzzle blast. I love firing it at dusk for relatives and friends. Definite crowd pleaser. I heard that the recoil was horrible but i found it relatively mild but then again i shoot a 18 in Remington 870 with slugs alot of the time.

Mild my ass... you musta been drugged either that or you think you are Paul Bunyan

There ain’t a 12 gauge made even in 3½ that kicks like a M44. I can shoot a 870 all day even with slugs… my M38/M44 I don’t want much more than 20 rounds of them at a time.

The M44 is a fire breathing monster that separate the men from the boys.

Nice one! Thats a pretty clean lookin one too. Ive been thinking on a m44, cheap ammo, lots of punch. Anyone know how accurate they are with original sights? That might be a good deer gun.

Enjoy,
They are fun. If you notice at the range that it gets hard to extract/eject/work the bolt after about 15 rounds or so, you prolly have a bunch of laquer built up in the chamber. Some solvent and a bristle chamber brush on a drill will clean it up nice. Then again, you might not have that problem. Also, FWIW, the M44 generally shoots better with the bayonet extended. If you get some of the Albanian surplus, get ready for some big assed fireballs too! WooooHOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

So, anyone who has one of these, what kind of groups do you shoot with it, and what kind of effective range does it have?
I'm thinking that it would be a pretty good deer rifle too, but we'll see how it shoots.

They can get surprisingly good groups (especially when you consider most surplus ammo is crap). I went to a milsurp shoot my bro-in-law put on. His dad showed up (he's got all sorts of shooting medals etc from when he was in the USMC in the 'Nam era) having never even handled a mosin, and proceeded to chew out the X-ring at 100 yards standing. As to effective range, I would imagine it's around that of a 30-06. Put a mojo sight on there and you have a great deer gun for wooded areas etc.

I haven't been there in a couple years, but you may find some good info here...

Now you need to get your C&R then you can buy them all day for about $50 then have an entire safe full of them

Here is one really good piece of advise! When you shoot it make sure you are standing, NEVER shoot it from a bench, it will hurt..... alot!

No shit I've got three of them. Usually the loudest (normal) rifle on the range.

The only thing that kept me from taking it hunting was the safety. If you actually use it, the deer would be long gone before you could have the gun ready to fire.

Nice rifle,to cut down on the recoil buy one of those cheap slip on pads, also shooting standing is a whole lot more friendly on the shoulder than from a bench

I bought one just like that from Century last week. It came in the mummy wrap and was in excellent condition. They are fun guns to shoot.

Ah... the fireball and muzzle blast.

I used to always take a M38 or M44 to the range... they are very handy for clearing annoying people out of adjoining slots at the range

The silver tip ammo is not bad at all. The yellow tip thumps pretty good, but the fire ball is great!

Well, here's the report from 2 Sgt's and a Cpl.......................We love it! We only had 60 rounds for the M44, 14 of which had cracked cases, burrs on the brass etc that we did not fire, but we did fire the rest of it. (surplus ammo) It dosen't kick as bad as I thought it would, but it is pretty strong. We fired decent groups at 50 offhand, and they only got better at 100 from the bench. No problems with it at all. We just wish we had more ammo.............but there's always next weekend. This thing is a lot of fun to shoot! Loud, a decent kick, fairly cheap ammo, and has a cool factor too it that you don't see at the range every day. Can't wait to get some factory ammo and start seeing what kind of groups I can get out of this thing. Maybe even a scope, who knows? So here's some pics, we also fired the AR and .45.

How would you like to be fighting across the steppe with it?

Or building to building in Stalingrad?

Extend the bayonet, see if it helps the groupings any, I am referring to your M44.

Thou shalt not altereth thy historic firearm! Well, really, it is your gun, so do as you please. I had to write that. It is my duty as a collector-type person. Go here and here to learn more about the Mosin-Nagant rifle family than you could possibly want to know.

I wouldn't mount anything if it would harm the rifle. Don't worry! Thanks for the links!

They are great guns. I have a 44 dated one. Never will part with it I gotta rag on you about one thing, EYE PROTECTION! especially with a surplus rifle and surplus ammo.
