This is horrible.  He was the victim of a drive-by shooting the night before last.  According to the police and witnesses so far, he was crossing the street and may have been mistaken for somebody else when a white van drove up.  The shooter used some sort of rifle and witnesses say something like 30 rounds were fired and the van sped off.  So sad, he was my friend's only child...25 years old and apparantly in the wrong place at the wrong time.  I found out yesterday afternoon when his wife (not the mother of his son) called me.

In Richmond...Gilpen(sp) Court.  Pretty shitty area.

Thanks all for your responses.  I did not know his son very well at all, but I know his father very well.  So terrible...I can't imagine what he's going through.  It kills me to think of the way he must be feeling.

Correction, VERY shitty area!

Was this that thing at the 7/11 where everyone drove themselves to the hospital.  If it wasn't, I have yet to hear of this one.  On the other hand, the local media has always been in denial of local street violence.

Sorry to hear that Chimbo, and as a father myself,...I can't imagine what I will do.

My condolences to you and the father.

No, not the 7-11 incident.  He was the only person hit, and he died on the scene.  It was on the news very briefly, and the Times-Dispatch has a small write up on it.  I haven't checked in a few hours though.  They probably won't give any more detail to the media, and I really don't want to ask my friend.  I figure he'll tell me more when he's ready.

I am so sorry for all of you especially the father and mother.

My friend lost his oldest son in February and it's tearing he and his wife up bad.

I talked to him a few days ago and he told me (as he held back crying) that he didn't think he will live much longer, that the pain in his heart is just to much for him to bear.

I try to be a good listener and tell him things will get better as time goes on, but right now he doesn't belive it will, it's very sad.

Chimbo,

My condolences to your friend.

Gilpen Court, along with Midlothian Village and Jefferson Village are some of the nastier areas in Richmond--I used to work for Rent-A-Center and did a good bit of my work (Deliveries, Advertising, and Repossesions) in the areas.  The Deputy that was assigned to us when we went out on repossesions didn't much like being in the area either.

Thank you all for your words.  Please keep him in your prayers.  I'm off to the viewing in an hour, and the funeral tomorrow.

Thanks again,
