My former partner, and FTO, Corporal Lamont Dent, from the Maryland National Capitol Park Police (Prince Georges County) passed away two days ago.  He had just finished his workout and daily run at the Station, when he collapsed, the victim of a heart attack.  He trained me as a rookie when we both were with DC Metropolitan Police, 5th District.
We stayed in touch all these years, and I credit his training with keeping me alive, and making me as succesful as I've been in this "thing of ours".
Shit, I saw him two weeks ago, and he still looked young, strong, and full of energy.  He never smoked, drank, ate anything other than chicken or fish, and worked out daily.  I just wanted to puke, when I heard about his death.
He was on the clock at the time, I believe, so his passing will be considered a line of duty death.  I've been up two nights straight with this.  He was the most righteous man I knew.

Sorry for your loss.  Like the story goes a scumbag will live to 85, but a good and honorable man will fall early.

Quoted:
That leaves you on the front lines now, brother. Respect his memory by doing what you know is right and good. He has laid the burden down, but other good men and women will pick it up and continue. So long as he lives in your heart or your advice to other young officers, and they to still others, he is still here in spirit.

Gpd Bless Cpl. Dent!

He said it way better than I could have....+1

...and God Bless his family and his friends.

Thanks to all who replied to this post.  We will bury him tomorrow morning.  Every year, it seems that there is some signifigant event that makes me take stock in what is important in life.
CPL Dent's passing is just such an event.
Just two weeks before he died, he was reminding me never to forget that not long ago, I was pushing a scout car, and that my responsibility was to the men and women in my command.  As usual, he was right on target.  I will serve his memory by never losing sight of that fact, and by trying to live as righteously as he did.
RIP, brother Dent.  I will miss you, but I will not forget.

rifle-cop,

while attending a LE funeral, the chaplain said it best about the Clallam County deputy who had been killed,

"every morning, when God goes out to pick his flowers, he only chooses His very best."

Go easy brother,
