that it bucks at least two shells out of the side saddle shell holder when I try to shoot five rounds.

It kicks like a mule with 2 3/4" Rio 00 buckshot. My cheek bone takes a pounding too.

Anybody got ideas on tightening up the sidesaddle?

have you tried making a genuine effort to real firmly pull the stock into your shoulder with your trigger hand? Like real firm.

People should not have guns.

Send it to me for proper disposal.

Maybe some black speed tape on the inside of the "U" of the shell holders, making them grip tighter?

Have the stock fit for you. I put a youth stock on mine, that help tremendously.

Put the brass on the round facing up not down.

Do you have the shells in the side saddle the right way? Brass goes up.

Buy a mesa tactical and dump the tacstar
Link Posted: 3/10/2010 2:23:53 PM EDT
You need to but a .50 muzzle break on it, obviously.
Link Posted: 3/10/2010 2:28:37 PM EDT
I've never had that problem with my SS. But, I shoot lighter ammo too.

As others have stated, shell openings should face toward the sky.

Link Posted: 3/10/2010 2:32:52 PM EDT
You might install a Blackhawk Recoil reducing buttstock. I put one on a Mossberg 835 and it feels no worse than my Rem 1100 now. I don't use side saddles on my shotguns though. If you insist on having more capacity get an extended tube or put a sleeve on the buttstock.

Even with the brass up, it'll sling a couple of shells out. Maybe just a cheap model shell holder. The weapon came with it mounted already.

I'll admit that the first time I shot it, I had the brass down for what I thought would be a faster reload. It wasn't very fast at all, what with having to kneel down and chase shells around in the grass.

Quit shooting buckshot?

Seriously, most of my shotgun shooting is done with birdshot and the like. I only shoot buckshot occasionally to keep the shot pattern fresh in my mind. Slugs, forget about that shit. Once a year maybe.

You could find a way to build up the shell holder with tape of some sort.

Link Posted: 3/10/2010 2:49:09 PM EDT
If it came with the side saddle already attached you might want to think about just replacing it. You never know how many times the shell has been just ripped out instead of sliding it out like it is designed to be.

I shoot slugs and buck out of my 870 bi-weekly, and I never have shells dumped out of my side saddle, maybe yours is worn out?

I also load mine brass up or down depending on how I have my loads set up(slug up, buck down)

Sissy wrists eh?

Knox Spec-Ops recoil reducing stock for 120 bucks.

Best investment I have ever made on my Mossberg 500.

Shooting slugs one handed is a breeze with this thing.

I did brass down, so I could pull it downward to release it, then shove it in the mag with one action...

I shot slugs and buckshot out of a Mossburg 500

They don't kick that hard.

Are you a girl?

WTF does my sex have to do with the recoil slinging the shells out of the sidesaddle?

I really don't want to know how you are capable of determining that

Not being an ass, but girls usually have a harder time with
the recoil and it is the recoil that is knocking the shells out.

Might have a bit to do with the rest of your original post. The part where you talk about how horrible the recoil is.
Link Posted: 3/10/2010 3:44:31 PM EDT
nevermind, it ain't worth it
Link Posted: 3/10/2010 3:53:07 PM EDT
Trade it in for a .410 Nancy.
Link Posted: 3/10/2010 4:01:35 PM EDT
If you havent shot a shotgun much, its a wholey different animal than a rifle, especially slugs. Its all in the stance and how you position the shotgun in the pocket of your shoulder to absorb the recoil, which you probably already know. I shoot alot of skeet with a winchester semi auto (really nice heavy gun with little recoil on normal loads) and was really suprised how much kick the handicapped loads have through a full choke. Im never sore after an afternoon of shooting, but the handicapped loads about handicapped me.
As far as the side saddle goes, I would try a little friction tape inside the saddle itself.

I agree, the SpecOps stock is awesome and the best thing I did to my 500.

my mossberg used to have a stout recoil also . so what i did was sell it and bought a saiga 12ga that i converted . i can shoot 3in shells and the recoil is negligible reloads are faster too..

I've never thought too highly about the mossberg accessories. A friend has a mossberg prersuader, pistol grip only, I shot it twice, the damned pistol grip sheared off cutting my hand in the process.

Get a mesa tactical shell holder and dump the one you have. If you want to cut down the recoil try a shorter stock, Speedfeed 1VS is a nice one.

What forearm setup do you run?
Link Posted: 3/10/2010 5:47:20 PM EDT
Try the push pull method Hackathorn teaches and dump the cheap side saddle.
Link Posted: 3/10/2010 5:54:26 PM EDT
Heavier stock, and different line, probably lower.all the advice I have.

Psssh! try 3" Double Aught Buck MAGNUMS.

Recoil reducing stocks could help the problem. Reduced recoil 00 buck might be another possible solution.
