I love painting and here is my first attempt at Sumi-e painting Does anyone have any suggestions for books or sources, or supplies for painting? I would LOVE input!!!

Also, does anyone else paint watercolor, oil, acrylic, or draw, sketch, make collages, or just doodle? (thought it would be a change to commenting on Crocs )

That looks really good, I like it.

Here's a painting I did about 5 years ago for a art class. I never had an interest in art. But our assignment was to replicate whatever the teacher choose for us. I'm glad I got an easy one, instead of starry night or something like that.

Here's what it was based off of, Picasso's Self Portrait:

So which Chinese character is that?
Does it say "Strength", "courage", etc?

it says bamboo!

Yours looks better (in my eye) than Pablos...!

Spiffy!

I don't do Sumi painting but I do sketch (well, I did when I had more time ) and have tons of old drawings. I need to do some new ones.

Wow! Great job! I think best way to learn is by drawing from example :)

Check out the work of a personal friend of mine Andy Lee. Very impressive stuff. He has done some stuff for various comics as well as a team up with David Mack (whom he was room mates with in college).

I like it, a lot.

If it had a tad more white area around it, or at the top I think it would be even better.

The color/shading of the layers of water color make it much more interesting. I'd hang it on wall

it looks very good. as you may know, the more confident strokes look best(the leaves...the bamboo stalk has more of a dither factor). still, nice!

I've been working on my strokes! So tough to tell your hand to let go of the table though when holding the brush! I am used to resting my hand on the table. Today I finally got my hand to let go and paint what my mind feels not what my head thinks :)

Thank you all for your comments and compliments!!!

I think that style is called Sumi-e. Pretty good work.

I paint with oils, when I get the opportunity to paint. I did a master study of starry night for my final project in HS art class. I like watercolor too. I have never tried the style that you have done, but your picture looks great!

I like how the rib fragments are shattering upward from the spinal column.

I may have watched too many horror movies as a child. Hmm.

Those are very beautiful. I just started an oil piece for my parents bar with drinks but painted in the "Starry Night" style
