(This was in the hobby forum, but thought I'd share it here since I'm so proud haha)

Somehow in the past couple months, between work/school/coaching/family, I got my hands on a couple of those new Bandai Star Wars models and had a concept I couldn't get out of my head.  Therefore, I nerded out.  I wanted a display I could put on my wall that was unique, so I got some really small wiring, a bunch of LED's, some super tiny SMDs, and fiber optics and went to work.  It all goes to a 9-volt battery tied to a switch.  In the future, if I find some Empire/Rebellion stickers, I'll put those on the switch as an "on/off" indicator.  Anyways, here it is.  What do you think?

That's wicked! I may have to get yo to build one for me.

Or steal yours, whichever is easier.

It's ok to embrace your inner geek sometimes.

Me?  I'm not really happy unless I can sequester myself for a few minutes a day and work on a creative project.

After reading the thread title, that is way better than I thought it would be.

Nice work.

You could probably do a decent job with those X-Wing minatures. They are prepainted and are mostly to scale, but cost a lot of money.  Please don't get that idea in my head, my wife will kill me lol!

I forgot to say that the LEDs flicker

Very cool.

Perhaps you can tilt the TIE fighter further.  Either rotate further left to see the cockpit area or rotate it so that you can see the top.

OR

Show the left wing already blown off, perhaps down toward the bottom of the starscape.

I like it a lot! It really shows well when looking at the overall diorama.

The Fine Molds kits are really nice too if you want to build something in 1/72.

Have you thought about having the laser cannons flash as if they are firing?

that's badass, but you got to somehow make blaster bolts

One complaint though, it should be the X-Wing having it's wings blown off.

So, what would I have to do to get you to make me one?

The Bandai kits blow Fine Molds out of the water, if you haven't seen them.

The pylons for the laser canons are so small and so long, it's impossible to drill them out.  People have done it with the Tie Fighter and SMD's, but they also wired it from the bottom. My Tie was wired from the side, and the space to go into its laser canons is too small for wiring.

I'm thinking of putting a PDF together of instructions, pictures and materials, but It'll probably take me a week or so.  I typically move on to other things after I do a creative project.  Haven't figured out what to do yet, but it'll probably involve building some type of furniture.  Thinking of making a convertible desk next.  With LEDs because LEDs are cool.

There is a 1:2700 scale Star Destroyer kit out now that is supposed be pretty good.  Better be for $130.
And you can get a Rebel Blockage Runner to go with it in the docking bay, from Shapeways.   It's only a little over an 1" long, if that.

Killer job on the explosion by the solar panel! I'm guessing that's a cotton ball with an LED in the middle? I'm curious as to how you made that explosion look so good!

My only gripe is the backdrop.  Everything else looks so badass that the chintzy star-streaks really break up the effect.

Nice work, OP.  I have envy.

Going to out-nerd you.  The stars wouldn't streak like that, you just Lucas Special Editioned the whole thing!

But that one glaring issue aside (I pick up on nit-picky things like that, it drives my wife crazy), that's really great work.  I'd love to have that hanging on my wall.

Your modelling skills are awesome, but that explosion, so much bad assery there, it took my breath away.  I have never seen anything more realistic than that.  Please post this to AircraftResourceCenter.com.  Those guys are gonna freak when they see it and there are some world class model builders there.

When I was collecting 1/18 Scale 21st Century Aircraft and tanks, twice a year I would replace the fishing line holding the planes up.  They got a detail cleaning then.  A dusting cloth was used for in between cleanings.  It took half a day.  Cleaning the halftrack was the biggest pain.  Tanks were pretty easy.  Ok, I'm lying.  It only took so long because I would fight a war during the twice yearly cleanings.  My poor ME-109 got smoked so many times I began to feel sorry for it.  Same for the JU-87.

That hobby began to eat into the bullet fund, so I stopped collecting.  Last thing I bought was an F6F.  The P-38 is huge.
