They don't know the terms until they submit the deal to the bank. Where I work, the customer has to sign that we can do that because it's a hard pull on the credit report.

I had a sales manager tell me that they don't haggle on prices, even though I was offered a lower price than the asking price by the salesman. The manager said all the dealerships are like that. "It's all like Car Max now". I walked out.
I was offering a lower price. They went down twice. Three times wasn't possible at which point, the manager had to come out. why couldn't the salesman just say we aren't going to go that low?

Had a "buddy" who was sold cars. He bragged that he got some guy to drive to his lot from out of state for a car they already sold. . . then sold him a different one.

If it's a used car I wouldn't make the trip if I were you.

There is a matter of privacy when it comes to your credit.
Every "hit" on your bureau from an outside source reads as an enquiry and will actually lower your credit score.
This is why your signature is required, one hit is no big deal but if you are submitting credit apps to several dealers it will show on you credit that you have several enquiries and are trying to get "bought" which raises a red flag and lowers your credit score.

The lower the score, the higher your interest rate will be and that effects your payment as well as the term.
Privacy wise you should be talking with the business manager of that dealer about the terms and rates when it comes to the financial arrangements, not the salesman, you have already closed on a price and that's as far as you interaction should go with him until he hands you the keys upon delivery.

Talk to the business manager.

I knew it worked like that, but I don't want to fly out there with nothing in writing.

How we used to do it with boats was we would have everything set up before the client arrived.

Only thing they had to do was just sign the app and fax/email it back

Do this if you really want this vehicle, and it looks good otherwise (condition, etc.).  You can always finance it through your local bank or credit union when you get home.

Why not put in an offer, and arrange financing through your personal bank.

Then just go out and cut them a check for the agreed upon price?

I've read that multiple hits in a short time period counts as a single hard pull. They assume you're rate shopping and don't doing you.

The article I read basically said to buy a car within a couple of weeks of your first credit pull so it gets counted this way. Not sure if valid...it was on the interwebz.

OP, why don't you get your financing BEFORE you go?  Like this.

1. walk into local credit union and get a rate at least a 1-2 points less than anything that dealership can provide
2. give them car info and with have them cut you a check.
3. hop on airplane with check go to dealer
4. hand them check and drive home

Its that easy and cuts out a LOT of the bullshit.

I had a new car salesman pull that crap on me recently.  "We don't haggle anymore. The price you see on the sticker is what you get..."

I said, "ok, thanks anyway," and headed out the door.

The price dropped like a rock before I could get to the sidewalk.

I've been kicking tires for a couple months, getting ready to buy a new truck or other 4x4.

"My credit union has approved me for $25K" shuts all of their financing bullshit right down. They know they can't touch a credit union's interest rate and it takes the wind right out of their sail's.

I live in the Florida panhandle.  I recently traded in an 08 Subaru STI for a 2016 VW Golf-R with Heritage VW of Atlanta GA.  We did the entire deal over the internet.  When I drove up everything was firm and in writing.  The only flyer, was the allowance on the STI was based on my description and subject to change if not as represented. That sounded fair to me, but I was expecting them to lower the value because of microscopic pitting or some other BS.  I was pleasantly surprised that they stuck with the value we had agreed on.  It restored my belief that not ALL car salesmen are crooks.

Yeah that's an option that I might just take.

The only problem I run into is that I try and finance for as long as they let me since it's for business use so the local credit union I use may only let me finance it for 3 years. Which isn't horrible.
