Hi all - I'm sure this has been discussed in the past, so please forgive my coming in mid-stream... I am planning a move to CA from CO, and I was wondering what issues lurk with my current collection of ARs and AKs. Clearly CA is not the place to live if you wish to buy AWs while in the state, but my interest was what happens with pre-existing collections for someone moving in-state? I'm hoping I don't have to transfer my guns to my dad prior to my move. TIA, - Snacko

I'M SURE THAT YOU CANNOT IMPORT THESE RESTRICTED AW'S INTO THE WONDERFUL STATE OF CALIFONIA.

Your current collection of AR's and AK's can't come in, legally anyway. Last date to postmark registration paperwork was January 23, 2001. DOJ estimates they've registered around only 10 per cent of the guns banned by Roberti/Roos and SB23. Cops don't seem to be a serial number jihad at the ranges I've visited, but all it takes is one red-hot and you are in a heap of crap...losing the rifle would be the least of your worries. I would give the guns to my Dad to keep for me, and visit them/him frequently. Law says you have 60 days to register the handguns http://caag.state.ca.us/firearms/ab991.htm. Won't say I did or didn't when I moved here a couple of years ago, but I'm leaving for ID in two days & don't plan on returning with too many guns. If you'd like advice on where to live/stuff to do, email me off list & I'll do my best. -hanko

Thanks all for your replies. Bleh. I guess a move to CA will be quite different than the open gun laws here in CO. Damn - and the new Colt 6400C is coming on line too :-( Any moves in CA to modify or repeal the laws governing these issues? Possibly with the conservative national leadership or the war against terrorism this might have an effect? - Snacko

I should mention for you to bring your own women. Ours are 80% crazy and not worth the effort. Unless you like very recent immigrants or porn stars that is.

You could bring your upper receivers and your internal lower parts and put them into a FAB-10 receiver which is legal in California. You could leave your standard AR lower receivers there in Colorado and they would be easier for someone you know to store compared to the whole rifle. Hurry out here to Kalifornia, we need your vote.

It is my understanding that you have to register any pistols you own, although I do not know if you have to have them held for the 10 day waiting period and all of that. As Troy says, no normal cap mags can be brought in at all. The so-called "aw's" can be brought in if you apply for a permit and are granted one. This is the same process required for permitting a full auto firearm, so the proverbial snowball in hell has a better chance of surviving than the PRK granting an "aw" permit to a new resident. Ray

Don't go! Come to Florida instead, everything is legal down here!

The Caliban encourages current residents who own AKs or ARs to move to another state. Importing them would constitute a felony for each firearm that qualifies as an "assault weapon" under Caliban law. Your rifles are not welcome here, and there is no chance you can get permission to bring them here legally. Have your dad store them for you in CO.

Troy, Have you looked at the California polls lately? Davis trails by 9 points and there is great dissatisfaction with the legislature. The Dems are worried big time. Now what we have to do is make sure to vote for the Republicans and not waste votes by voting Libertarian or for some other third party candidate who doesn't stand a chance.

only problem I have is if the California Republicans will be much better. Will still love to see Davis loose though

Pray for more hot, humid weather. Come on, Arizona monsoon! Another summer of Blackouts and Rumors of Blackouts could be just the wooden stake we need to drive through Red Davis' heart.

ALL of the anti-gun legislation comes from the Dems. The Republican leadership likely won't allow any to move through committees. Any change to the right from the current legislature would be an improvement.

Yea but reps wont repeal them either... In terms of presidents the reps and dems changes place all the time, and dems want more law, reps dont seem interested in repealing any of them, so the net effect is WE'RE STILL SCREWED.

Damn I have been thinking of moving OUT seriously. Really getting sick of the traffic, bad air, and high cost rent/real estate. Talking about AR in CA? Forget about it. Just go to any gunshows in CA and you will see how depress they are.
