I heard that in CA movie studios are allowed to have FA weapons.... Is this true? and if so what exactly do need to be considered a "movie studio"?

That is correct, CA state law has exexmption for movie companies with full-auto guns and assualt weapons.  Stembridge is gone, but they had an extensive collection of FA guns that was converted only to fire blanks.

This just allows ownership of FA weapons? you couldn't purchase them at LE prices?

No.  NFA is federal law.  Still in effect no matter what california says.
