I recently watched an interesting movie, “La Vie en Rose”. Which is the story of Edith Piaf, the famous French singer.

I was interested in the movie, as I had read about her and was familiar with her most famous song, “Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien” ((I Have) No Regrets). This song is the “Unofficial” Official Song of the French Foreign Legion.
You may be familiar with the song, as the Legion often sings it or plays it. Here Edith is, singing it.

It is a very “French” song, expressing that she has no regrets for her life. The Legion troops sang it as they were marched out of their barracks in after the Algerian War. From Wiki:
“Piaf dedicated her recording of the song to the French Foreign Legion. At the time of the recording, France was engaged in a military conflict, the Algerian War (1954–1962), and the 1st REP (1st Foreign Parachute Regiment) — which backed a temporary putsch of 1961 by the French military against the civilian leadership of Algeria — adopted the song when their resistance was broken. The leadership of the Regiment was arrested and tried but the non-commissioned officers, corporals and Legionnaires were assigned to other Foreign Legion formations. They left the barracks singing the song, which has now become part of the French Foreign Legion heritage and is sung when they are on parade.”
You may also be familiar with her song which was played in “Saving Private Ryan” on the record player before the German attack.

She also sang the song, “La Vie en Rose” which was very popular and something that most of you would recognize, as it has been recorded by many singers.
She was raise in a whore house, led a terrible young life, and lived a sad and addictive life as an adult. She died at age 47 from cancer.
Her music is very moving, and is still loved by the French. She is regarded as the most popular French singer of all time.
What a sad life and what hauntingly beautiful songs.
