Troy, what is so much better on this mossberg
than the old persuader with heat shield?
There must be some{GOOD} reason to justify
the large price differnce.

Speaking of those damn mossbergs. Wouldn't it be nice if someone could tell me if I can get a mag extension for my 835 unti-mag and who makes it. Thanks.

I think Choate makes one.  I saw a six rd. extension for my 9200 in SGN I think.  No, it was the Brownells catalogue!!!  Ya, that's it.

Forget Mossberg. Get a Benelli M1 Tactical with a 2 shot extension so you can have a 7 round shot capacity. It is the fastest autoloading shotgun in the world. However, if you are willing to wait a year, get the new Benelli M4 shotgun. It's tougher than the M1, yet it still rocks. Played with it at the NRA convention. I want one bad.

Still waiting for advice on the blued/parkerized difference.
The blued one I have came w/ the heat shield, & at the time I was told that if you got the parked one that it came as pictured above, w/ no heatshields & w/ a ghost ring already installed.  The heat shields were all blued, so that addition on the aforementioned weapon would look rather odd.  Lately I've seen a few at gunshows like mine (heatshields,9 shot cap, & bayo lug) that ony differ in finish, & wonder if I'm better off keeping the blued one, or doing a trade.  I've never owned a parkerized firearm, & merely wonder if the finish is as durable, better/worse, or otherwise.  I put a Hogue compstock & forend combo on mine (which is a sweet setup, by the way,) & think it would look better parkerized.  Help!

I like parkerized better on mine.  It is resistant to the oil on your hands and moisture.  It is more rust resistant.  It looks good too.  The ghost rings makes target acquisition Fast!  I hope this helps.

Good point about the military, Troy.  Duh, hadn't thought of that.  As for the rust resistance, mine is only a year or so old & already has some minute fuzz on the barrel.  Yep, I thought I kept it clean enough.
I tried the ghost rings before, but for some reason just couldn't make them work for me on a shotgun.  Plus I like the profile better without them, as it sometimes resides in a pouch along the bottom of the front seat of the truck.  Looks like I'll be "upgrading"...
Thanks for all the input, guys.  God, I love this board!

How about #51668, the 590A1 model? Seems to be about the same as the #50668. I don't know what the difference is other than the A1 model cost about $50 more.

It's my understanding that the A1 model has the heavier mil-spec barrel; someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah, if I wanted a Mossy, I'd get the 590 A1.  If you want to stay with Mosseberg, then by all means trade for the parkerized one.  You get metal parts and a thicker barrel.  Benelli's are okay if you want to spend the money, but you can't beat a pump when it comes to reliability and feeding it ammo.

ah, feels good to post on this board again...

Anyone know if you can mount the heatshield over the heavy barrel?  I'd heard no, but figured I'd ask anyway.

The newer parkerized 590's heatshields are finished to match the weapon.  They don't even offer the blued 590s anymore, or at least not that I can tell by their website.  Since my wife tends to shoot it more than myself whenever we decide to go & burn up some ammo, I'd rather keep the heatshields.  Some may think them to be purely a frilly aesthetic, but if I can get them already on the shotgun why wouldn't I?  I may change to a pistol grip later, you never know. The ghost ring setup really isn't an issue.  I'm pricing both the 50665 & 50668 models anyway.
Anyone want to buy mine?

That #51668 looks like a winner. Do you guys know if they are available with the heat shield factory installed? It would look kind of cool even with the speedfeed stock. :)

Opps, scratch that. The Mossberg web site says the heat shield will not fit the 590A1. Oh well.

Hey, Troy, so you have one of the 590A1s?
How hot does the heavy barrel get during an extended shooting session of, say, 20-30 rounds?

Try one of the new Hogue COmpstocks - it'll make you a believer.
In what I have no idea, but you'll like it.

I have kept a 590 as my primary home-defense weapon for about six or eight years now.  It is an extremely durable, dependable weapon.

The parkerized finish is extremely low maintenance.  I wipe it down a couple times a year with CLP. that's it.  I can't really speak to the effectiveness or need for the heat shield.  Mine came with it standard, but I have never shot more that about twenty rounds in a 30 minute period.  In a "battle" situation, which this Mil-Spec piece was designed for, it would definitely be a plus.

I have always wondered what bayonet fits the 590.  Does anyone out there know?

I have a 590 but not the A1. Mine is a 9 shot parked model with the heat shield. Love it to death! any bayonet that fits an AR15 will also fit the Mossy. Another thing, Mossy says you cant get a heat shield on heavy barrels because they are, well, larger than the standard barrel. You also cant use a heat shield with ghost rings, UNLESS, you install the heat shield THEN install the ghost rings. Bad thing is you wont be able to remove the heat shield, which I never do anyhow. Whichever 590 model you choose, you will be happy with it. its a brute.
