Did security make them take off their shoes?

Airline and airport security, like societal security, is illusory at best. Some dedicated nutbar will ALWAYS find a way through the security net.

The treatment we get in airports now is evidence that the government cannot protect us. They can only grasp at straws that are supposed to show the taxpaying public that, "yes, by jingo, we are doing something about terrorism- now, John Q. Public, cooperate- or else!"

Who wins? The terrorists.
Who loses? We do.

I am afraid you have just recieved a lesson in government failure.  While a few nut jobs ARE prevented from boarding, most are missed.  Passenger screening is a big failure; remembber 9/11?  The worst part of it is the creation of a false sense of security.  Most of the anti-terrorism actions the government takes are in this category.  What REALLY needs to be done is not PC so never is even discussed!

Okay, so by your logic he's a moron because he was brave enough to exercise his 2nd Amendment right in an airport and it caused you delays?  You should be mad at the FAA and our stupid federal government, not the poor guy who wanted to protect himself.  He's the real patriot, even if his actions have been misinterpreted or not well calculated.  

If we don't cut out this crap soon, air travelers are going to be wearing paper suits and have to undergo random body cavity searches.

The situation is already ridiculous and undignified.  Rather than admit failure, they keep upping the ante.  As long as it keeps happening, American freedom is doomed.  Well, it's already mostly gone anyways, but there's more that can be taken from us.  It's all a slow process of destroying our resistance to tyranny--having to show your ID 4 or 5 times, having to take off your shoes and be wanded and patted down.  I never thought that would happen in the United States of America.  When it starts to move outside of the airports, you'll get the true picture.  And we thought this bullshit would be contained in the schools!  Ha!  A whole generation of Americans is being raised who will not resist intrusive government.  You can't resist it if you think it's somehow normal for life to be this way.

Being lucky just once for the terrorists killed about three thousand lives recently, as I recall.

As for making job conditions and training better, who is going to pay for it? And, what happens when the terrorists STILL get through, or find more insidious ways of killing masses of people, undetectable or unthinkable to us at this point?

Who REALLY imagined about a year ago that Sept 11 actually would occur? No government expense could really have prevented this, not without massive loss of personal liberties and heavy-handed surveillance everywhere. I don't think most people- exc. for those who were there- have quite grasped how unfathomably horrible this attack was, and how little our security agencies and police can do to PREVENT these occurrences. All they can really do is clean up the mess afterwards, and -maybe- catch and punish the perps.

Besides Osama Bin-laden, the only other winner from federalising airport security personnel: the Democratic Party. When the personnel are all federal unionized employees (AFSCME), they will be indebted to the liberal Dems who got them their government jobs. [rolleyes]

Good news for the security screeners.  Some of them are NOT gonna have to find new jobs.  Why should anyone have to have a high school diploma to exercise decisions of security matters anyway.

Everyone keeps screaming that security failed that day.  Well, it did not.  The boxcutters they took on board were not banned at the time of the attack, so there was no failure in security.  Give it a rest.

Yes, he is a moron.  I don't like the fact that I can't carry on board one bit, but I am not going to delay everyone else and go to jail just to prove a point, at least not yet.  If you know what the rules are and are willing to risk your freedom, that's fine, but don't involve a few thousand other unwilling people in your crusade.  Let's see you do it and go to jail.  Then you will have the right to criticize those of us who call him an idiot.  His actions have not been misinterpreted, they have clearly said they realize he had no terrorist intentions.  People like him give gun owners a bad name and will just make it worse for us.

Before you start ranting about caving in, it is not time yet to really start a revolution or anything.  We should exhaust the political process first.  Besides, what have you done?
