Maybe, sometimes it takes more than one bullet to stop a perp?

The cops, where is Al Sharpton?

LONG BEACH, Calif. - A man suspected of shooting two police officers during a traffic stop was killed in a wild shootout with police in a strip mall parking lot, authorities said Thursday.

More than 50 shots were fired between Santa Ana police officers and 33-year-old Oscar Gabriel Gallegos on Wednesday, Santa Ana Police Chief Paul Walters said.

Gallegos was a suspect in the Dec. 22 shootings of two Long Beach officers during a traffic stop.

Santa Ana officers went to confront a man believed to be Gallegos, Long Beach Officer Jason Evans said. "As soon as he sees the car with the officers, he starts shooting," Walters said.

The officers got out of their car, took cover and returned fire, police said. Three officers shot at Gallegos, who was hit several times.

Gallegos continued to fire on officers even after he was shot, Walters said. He died of his wounds in the parking lot, police said.

Gallegos was an illegal immigrant who had been deported three times and had a criminal record dating back to 1990, including arrests for drug offenses and assault with a deadly weapon, authorities said.

Officers Abe Yap, 35, and Roy Wade, 39, were shot in their squad car after stopping a car for running a red light. Both are hospitalized in critical but stable condition, Long Beach Police Chief Anthony Batts said.

press doesn't take into account things like unguided bullets, cover, movement, adrenaline, etc. Then again neither do some of the armchair SWAT guys here. Been there done it and it sucks, don't want to do it again. Not to mention the years of civil litigation by the "misunderstood victim of police overzealousness".

Maybe there would be less of this and less rounds fired if backup cops were armed with ar15's at the low ready position.  Nah, wouldn't go over to well with the sheeple

The heck with the "sheeple", imagine what General Discussion would say about it.

Of course it would be a break from the "assault pants" arguments.

Someone should do the stats on ILLEGALS who shoot cops. Seems like a disproportionate number lately....

FWIW: The original reason Long beach tried to stop the shooter was he was observed by an off duty cop in a gun store and the cop noticed he was buying buying a CCW holster so he called dispatch. They knew him from prior arrests and knew he is not allowed to own firearms.

Very timely with all the "should felons be able to own guns" threads.

When the training car tried to pull him over he jumped out and shot both cops before they were even out of their car.

When he was killed, it was by three SWAT cops with "assault weapons." Assault weapons and hicap mags mere citizens in Cali cannot buy anymore. Plus he was killed without ever having a trial and after all is "presumed innocent."

So yes, lot's of GD fodder. [Tinfoilhat]Felon who had served his time targeted for simply buying a holster and killed without the benifit of a trial.[/tinfoilhat]
