Cleaner hurt in hammer attack
A shopping centre cleaner has been seriously injured by a man who attacked him with a hammer on the Gold Coast overnight.
A police spokeswoman said the 61-year-old cleaner had been putting garbage in a bin when he was confronted by a man in his 20s outside the Nerang Fair Shopping Centre about 2am (AEST).
The man demanded the cleaner hand over his wallet and mobile telephone.
When the cleaner refused, the man struck him several times with a hammer in the abdomen, chest and head.
The attacker then ran off without taking the wallet or telephone.
The spokeswoman said the cleaner was taken to Gold Coast Hospital where he remained in a stable condition.
Police are seeking a man of caucasian appearance, 165-175cm tall, medium build and wearing a black long-sleeved shirt, black pants and black balaclava.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Meanwhile, a 28-year-old Southport man will appear in Southport Magistrates Court on Monday charged over the alleged stabbing of a 34-year-old NSW man who was waiting in the Southport Hospital emergency room about 3pm (AEST) on Sunday.
The NSW man received head injuries and a knife wound to the chest in the attack.
