Mom recounts encounter with alleged gunman

     CEDAR - Lee Ann Hecht was about to let her dog in from the cold when she found herself face-to-face with a gunman who forced his way into her family's home.
     Police say that gunman was Dean Kinske, 18, of Suttons Bay, who's been charged with first-degree home invasion, assault with a dangerous weapon and felony firearms possession.
     Leelanau County sheriff's officials allege Kinske broke into Hecht's home the night of Jan. 26 and handcuffed Hecht and her 17-year-old daughter in separate rooms.
     Hecht, a veteran of 10 years in the military, said she tried to remain calm and assess the situation. She talked to the intruder, who was clad in camouflage and carried an AR-15 assault rifle.
     "The more you can get them to be calm, the more chances are there is going to be a positive outcome," said Hecht. "In this case, we were very fortunate. The good Lord was with us and blessed us with a positive outcome."
     Sheriff's officials said Hecht was able to free herself from the handcuffs and confront Kinske, who allegedly unmasked himself before he fled the house.
     "...(H)e did ask for ransom and at one point in time he did ask for money," said Hecht.
     Police issued state and national bulletins for Kinske. Grand Traverse County sheriff's deputies arrested him two days later after he was spotted walking near Silver Lake Road.
     Leelanau County Sheriff Michael Oltersdorf said soon after Kinske's arrest officers located his abandoned vehicle and gun near the border of Newaygo and Kent counties, where the teen apparently spent the night Jan. 26.
     "Basically, he figured we knew who he was and what car he was driving," he said. "He said the next day he walked for a while, ended up in Sparta and hailed a taxi to come back and turn himself in."
     Kinske, who is in the Leelanau County Jail on $500,000 bond, is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Feb. 17.
     "From what I know he was a real quiet kid, did not socialize a lot in school and didn't socialize with the same people my daughter did," said Hecht. "My biggest hope is that we can settle this out of court and move on."
     Oltersdorf said Kinske has expressed remorse about the incident to investigators.
