BOSTON — Nine black Boston police supervisors have filed a federal lawsuit in which they claim they were denied advancement because of a discriminatory promotion exam.
The supervisors are suing the city, demanding that it scrap the multiple-choice lieutenant's test. Black and Latino officers historically fare worse on the exams than white and Asian candidates. There is always the possibility they will argue that the exam questions are culturally bias; but more likely it is because if you grow up with head of the line privileges and then one day you have to make it on an competitive basis you find out life can be a bitch.

Differential outcomes? Oh yeah, sure, the only reasonable conclusion is discrimination.

Maybe next they should sue their school system for failing them, or perhaps they should sue their father for not being around. The problem is not necessarily the tests but the failings of their society. In other words the issues are much deeper than the test, the solution I don't know maybe you dumb down the tests for the minorities, but then that just creates bad feelings among the white majority.

Some one post a sample of some of the test question (if possible or legal) so we can all see what the bias is.

One of these days I'm going to see a lawsuit in which a class of minority kids sue the school district because they turned out stupid.
While I hold my breath waiting for that to happen, it honestly wouldn't surprise me if they had a legitimate complaint about Boston. We were on Cape Cod those summers, so we got to enjoy the nightly news reports of the riots, destruction, and deaths that were Boston's answer to the busing plan. It left a lasting impression of the makeup of Massachusetts liberals. The news often led with busing stories rather than Watergate. |

I think its the same as when they lowered the tests for the F.D. the woman could not pass them so they lowered them. If I need to be dragged out of a burning building I want the hulk showing up not someone who needs help getting by the test.

Here's the argument that Jax Fire/Rescue lost.
In the class action lawsuit filed on Tuesday, black firefighters attack the promotional system, which ranks candidates by their score on a 100-question multiple choice exam. The lawsuit says that the multiple choice exam doesn’t test the merit of a candidate and doesn’t test the skills needed for the job, but it favors white test-takers who traditionally outscore black candidates no matter their relative educational levels. |

Yeah fdny had to change up their test....but that wasn't good enough now they want some sort of supervision inside firehouses because the fdny is mostly white and a lot of guys are related...get your job and do your job like everybody else and there won't be a problem

Judging by what most cops in MA do,it probably is something like this: When sleeping in your car on an 8 hour detail making $50 an hour,what do you do at the end of your shift ? 1) Find another $50 an hour detail to work. 2) Park your car around the corner and sleep some more. 3) Set up a speedtrap and work overtime. 4) All of the above. |

Here's where my mind is blown. An LT, or so I would think, would have more responsibility and be responsible for a greater volume of paperwork. These candidates are complaining about what amounts to a chunk of paperwork. Boggled.

This isn't the argument I would use but they are pretty much already on par for employees of race based on percentage of population.
