I still think that plane is cool! Ever stand by one of them? They're TINY!
IIRC the turbine in it comes from an industrial vacuum system... Something like that. The designer was an engineering genius. Too bad he couldn't figure out how to make the money work. |

  Noted French pilot Nicolas Charmont has installed 2 AMT Olympus turbines in his Cri Cri together with AMT on-board automatic start-up units and individual EDT's. The Cri Cri weighs 170 Kg, and should have enhanced performance withover 36 Kg of thrust available. The Cri Cri has made his maiden flight in the weekeind of 7-8 March. Top speed at this flight was 240 km/hour (150 mph). Flying with only one engine the speed is still 160 km/hour (100mph). |

I saw a 2 man team perform with the BD-5J back in 1975 or 1976. Flown by Bobby Bishop and Corky Fornoff; one of them did the stunts for the Bond film.

The quotes above just don't add up to me... sounds just fine for an aircraft with a 250kias Vne (velocity never exceed).... 72kias stall speed (aka Vs) ... hmm.... 1.35Vs is standard approach speeds for most aircraft... so thats 1.35x72 kias = 97.2 kias..... guess what.... I teach students to fly the mighty T-34C and our no flap appch speed is 95 kias.... doesn't sound too hot to me... as for the problem with this plane... its the engine.... but check this company out for a potential source of cheap reliable motors (but they aren't interested in civilian sales). They have tested 12" vairents and I talked with one of their engineers about a design for 13"..... |
