In San Diego the MCRD sells firearms (duty pistols and hunting shotguns and rifles) and ammo. The ammo is sold in a different store about a block away. You were not allowed to bring the weapons back on base without permission. I had one of my students get in trouble as he pulled out his loaded pistol in the gun store on base to find a holster that fit. Before the SSC NTC closed down they sold hunting knives ... and you had to be escorted off base if you bought one. At my DoD command the commander doesn't have problems with the military bringing weapons into the command as long as they're unloaded, kept out of sight, and stored in a locked container of some type. The same doesn't apply to the civilians - even the ones with 24 years in the military and are now retired.
