"Gender Free" policies? Is this the concept that led the Jolly Fellas to GIVE some of their female soldiers breast implants, in an effort to increase their self esteem? Ohhh, the things one feels compelled to wonder about...
Army Training Too Tough for Women?
LONDON (Reuters) - The number of female British army recruits injured in training has more than doubled since ''gender-free'' policies were introduced in 1998, according to a newly published study.
The same physical tests are now applied to male and female army applicants, they undergo identical training, and the women are expected to reach the same fitness levels as the men.
But army researchers who compared the new and old policies say women face a ``substantially greater risk'' to their health than men after the changes.
They examined medical discharges among 5,697 men and 791 women recruited before the changes and 6,228 men and 592 women afterwards.
Lieutenant Colonel Ian Gemmell, the army occupational physician who did the study, said: ``There are a lot of women who come into the army and are subsequently injured. I don't think it is right to sit back and watch that happen.''
He said experience in the U.S. marines showed that many more females succeeded when the training period was extended. But this cost more and it would be ``a braver man than me'' that determined the maximum training period that should be allowed.
