Living in Mexico is its own punishment. But, in all fairness, going a certain amount above the speed limit in the U.S. could also land you in jail depending on the location. |

.... it cost me 2 hours and 40 bucks to stay out of the clink in TJ for using a dirt parking lot at 2am for a whizz spot, after I couldn't find a restroom. 5 federales with m16's makes the wallet come out pretty quickly after the long required haggle session. Never be in TJ again. Everyone should go once though. It really makes you appreciate what we have and was a lot of fun for 1 day.

A guy who worked with us in the US who was from Mexico himself, told me of an incident in Mexico where the cops were nailing people coming out of a hotel driveway onto the main road. Seems that the speed limit on the hotel driveout was 3 MPH. He said that the police told people when they stopped them for "speeding" coming out of the driveout, that they would "look the other way" and" just forget about it" for a monetary fee of $50. He said it happened all of the time. When you shook the cops hand, was best to have a little currency folded up to pass off to the cop. Otherwise, plan to spend an undetermined amount of time behind bars. You could be there a very long time too for something really minor. Visitors beware.

Mexican cops asking for a bribe?? imagine that, what's next American politicians taking bribes??. If you don't want to have to pony up bribes don't speed in Mexico simple as that. I know it sucks but even if you are going along with traffic you are still breaking the law and they have every right to grab anyone out of the pack they feel like it. The one time I was in that shithole I drove EXACTLY the speed limit everywhere I went and guess what?? I never had to bribe one crooked cop, I got ripped off by a gas station but never pulled over.
