Who wants to see a cool vid?

Bf-109G6 "Gustav" flying.  I especially like the whine of the turbo of that big Daimler Benz inverted V12.

One of the finest planes made in WW2.

I would love to fly in one, that would be awesome.

That was bad to the bone.  Wish they would put the swastika on the tail so it would look 100% correct though!  Thought he was going to ground loop on that first landing!

You'd think a Navy guy would prefer a plane from the Naval Department

Easy landings was never one of the 109's virtues.

No, VF-17 was a navy squadron.

From www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq6-1.htm

....
VF-17 was established on January 1, 1943, and during WW II it produced an outstanding record as a fighter squadron. The Jolly Roger insignia was adopted during this period. On Nov. 15, 1946, all Navy squadrons were redesignated and VF-17 became VF-5B. Subsequently, it was redesignated VF-61 on April 28, 1948, and then disestablished on April 15, 1959. Commander Hoppe was the C.O. of VF-61 when it was disestablished. The Jolly Roger insignia had been used by VF-17/VF-5B/VF-61 from 1943 until April 15, 1959.

Not going to happen. Public display of the swastika in Germany is a major crime.

Take off and landings in the Bf-109 were brutal, I have heard it said that more died during takeoff and landings than in actual combat.

Love hearing he sound of the Daimler-Benz.

IIRC that particular D-B powerplant was the first one (or one of the first) equipped with fuel injection giving an advantage in inverted flight and negative G's over the Spit and Hurricane

Ahhh what beutifull machines - both the Gustav and the Corsair.

The Bf-109 DB engine was fuel injected and it gave them an edge during the Battle of Britain over the Spitfire and Hurricane, it also made the engines respond instantly to any change in throttle.   The British over came this with a new carburator design a little later on.

Yea...I like the Corsair...but that flic of the Bf-109 is excellent...and there are so few of them flying now.  I'd love to see them tangle for real...with just MILES gear of course...no reall ammo.

It was actually a masterful "crab" landing.  I learned to do that well early in my flying career lo these many decades ago.  Not hard...bleeds off speed and lets you land in a crosswind.

He did it superbly.  Very good pilot.

Anyone speak German?

Great vid, thanks- I think I posted it here about a year ago, but good to see it again.

Something about, "It's in, I turned it on, and the (something or other, he's mumbling,  sounds like "throttle") is in the forward position." He's referring to something the other guy knows about, but not the listener.

Great footage- I love WWI planes, especially the Corsair.

Very few Corsairs still flying; I was at this show watching as the plane went down It was probably the most beautifully restored flying Corsair I have ever seen.

Mea-Culpa....They were land based and flew with Marine squadrons.
