Ok kids... it's post #1000 here for MrsGloftoe.  That means it's time for me to give back!  I want to buy some happy boys and girls memberships for ar15.com.  Would you like one?  Good!  Either:

1) Make a nifty new photoshop of one of the current Yahoo News most popular photos or (for the photoshop challenged);
2) Write a little essay on what ar15.com means to you, around 500 words-ish.

I will be giving out at least 5 bronze memberships.  Extra credit is given for what makes me laugh hardest.

Get to it, and good luck!

ETA: Deadline is noon EST, August 7!

I know - I'm not trying to enter the competition.  But that picture just cracked me up so badly.

I'm getting a little loopy - I'm up late working on a manuscript that I need to have back to the co-author tomorrow (and the co-author is my fiancee, so I don't want to piss her off )

What AR-15.com means to me.

AR-15.COM means alot to me. It is a place that I can go to be around other people like me. Nobody here cares what I look like, how much money I have, or what I do for a living. I can talk about guns here, and nobody makes remarks about me shooting up a church, or anything like that. Nobody here thinks I'm wierd because I love guns. AR-15.COM gives me a place to go. I can come here an participate in rational, and sometimes irrational,  discussions about guns, politics, dogs, pie, or anything else you could think of. I can come here and tell people how good or bad my day was. The people at AR-15.COM don't hold anything back, so I am able to get unbiased, honest opinions about anything that I am debating. I may not always agree with what people say, but here I am able to tell them.

AR-15.COM gives me a place to go, even when I  am feeling bad. When I am angry, or sad, I know the General Discussion board will have something to cheer me up. When I am happy I can tell people here, and some of them will even seem to be happy for me. When I want to get mad, I can safely bet that there is something in the General Discussion forum that will get me there. I can come here and ask a question about almost anything and get an answer. I may have to dig through four pages of pie jokes, sarcastic answers, and guys calling me a troll, but the answer is ALWAYS there. Sometimes, I even get to answer a question, but only if I am really quick. If I don't know how to spell a word, or properly form a sentence, I can post it here and 50,000 people will immediatly go to work letting me know how it is supposed to be.

This board gives me a place to go that isn't full of nutcases. I won't name names, but we all know there are gun boards full of nuts out there. There are discussion boards that seem to advocate war with the United States Government, indescriminate killing of other races, and unprovoled murder of Federal Agents. Some of the boards out there really make gun owners look like the terrorists that the left would have you believe we are. Not AR-15.COM though. I can come here and read rational discussions between engineers, doctors, and lawyers. I can come here and learn about nearly anything. The staff here works to keep out the trolls, nutcases, and those who give us a bad image.

Most importantly, AR-15.COM makes me feel at home. I feel comfortable here, because everybody here is into the same thing as me. I am able to socialize with people here, and still be honest about about what I am interested in and what I believe in. I can talk to a person here as an equal, whether he is a doctor or a gas station attendant. I don't have to worry about people here sayig things about how I dress, or how I look because they can't see me.

AR-15.COM is my home on the web. It is the first place I go for answers, entertainment, and factual information. It is the sole reason that I own a computer and have internet service. Nobody here has made fun of me yet, even after I told them I was going to school to be a male nurse.

Without this board the gun community online would be a very sad place.

I don't know if this is even close to 500 words, and I am pretty sure it isn't a prize winning essay. I don't really care. At least I got a chance to tell you all how I feel about this site.

Okay, that isn't really true. I do care about winning. The essay may not make it, but hopefully it will. I need a membership bad.

+1

Damn I was going to write my own essay, but this one pretty much sums it up.  It's amazing to me that so many of my fellow arfcommers are of the same occupation as myself.  As expensive as this hobby is, it's no surprise I guess that quite a few members of this board are engineers, who invariably have quite a bit of "disposable" income.  This is not to take away from any of our other forum members in any ways shape or form, as a matter of fact I really enjoy the fact that this board has people from all walks of life.

I guess I will do a top 10 list about things I like about this site:

1) people here are likeminded about something I care passionately about, IE the US constitution, the RKBA specifically, and the people who will protect our rights.
2) the friendly atmosphere.  Aside from a few incidents, most disagreements here are settled in a friendly manner, through intelligent, and sometimes not so intelligent, discourse.
3) this is usually the site with earthshattering news posted first.  Probably has something to do with the huge number of members.
4) quite a few guys playing in the big sandbox post their experiences here.  We will never get that from the main stream media, so it's nice to have a view into that world that's not distorted by the PC police.
5) the people here generally seem like good guys.  I think if the SHTF, most here would be willing to help out their fellow arfcommers.
6) this is where I picked up the term "asshat", a constant source of amusement for my non-gun board friends.
7) if I ever need a pick me up, the general discussion board has many humorous posts not at all related to guns.
8) BOTD threads.  'nuff said.
9) best source of cool videos.
10) food for my firearms addiction.  If it wasn't for you guys, I probably wouldn't "just get both"

See, I almost did that without mentioning firearms.  This board to me is about way more than just black rifles.  That's how I found my way here.  Now the other stuff keeps me from leaving.

Ar-15 means a lot to me. I seem to be on this site more than ever, and I also can’t seem to stay away. Arfcom, the greatest gun board on the net, is a place that I can go to make fun of people, be made fun of, discuss religion, politics, police, trucks, Iraq, WMD, see funny John Kerry pictures, Copenhagen (well, I wish), Babes of the day, the newest gear, SHTF scenarios, and most importantly, I can get mostly no BS answers to my questions. I can discuss my favorite rifle, the AR-15.

On this site I can cry, laugh, fart and fight, all with my brothers and sisters in arms. This site is more to me, than I thought any web site would ever be, and I am glad for that. What does this site mean to me, you ask? It means I’ll have a place to come to after, or during, work, and let off some serious steam. I can come here and be guaranteed a good laugh, most likely at someone. But its all ok, because in a couple of minutes, they will be laughing at me.

Well, shoot. Who wouldn’t like this site? We rip democraticunderground.com all the time, along with Kerry/Fairy. We skew all the polls possible, and aren’t very sneaky about it. Other sites get mad because we ruin their polls, and they know it was us because someone hotlinked it. It’s frickin great! We don’t care who thinks what about us.

I can show my guns to people who actually appreciate them, and you can be damn sure I’ll be even more proud of them when some one says, “hey, nice black rifle ya got there!” This site means a lot, and I think that it means a lot to every one else that posts regularly on ARFCOM.

I honestly go through withdrawals when I don’t post here. I had no idea that I was this addicted until I was out shooting last weekend, and some moron comes up to me asking to shoot my Black Rifle, and I was sitting there thinking about a tactical scenario that might come up if I let him have the only gun in my possession at that moment. I then proceeded to try to turn around and type it in to arfcom, except I was out in the middle of nowhere, and my computer was 30 miles away. I started thinking I was crazy or something. I wondered if I was normal, but then I came to this very important realization:

WE AT ARFCOM ARE THE NORMAL ONES, EVERYONE ELSE HAS SOME SERIOUS ISSUES.

So, that is what arfcom means to me, and it is about time I pony up, do my share and pitch in that cash I was going to take down to my local rifle shop to buy more ammunition, and send it down to the webmaster. (That and I want a damn signature line!) That is, assuming I don’t win this contest.

501 words right there

What Arfcom means to me,

I was born a poor black child in rural Arkansas, and one day grew up to be a white man and President of the United States. Can You guess my name?

Now I am just an unemployed hispanic Miner in South Western Arizona who can't seem to be away from his computer for more than a few minuets at a time. And it is all because of Arfcom.

You see Arfcom is not a hobby, or harmless recreation, it is an ADDICTION that has taken over my life, and has at times left me whimpering in a fetal positon crying on the floor, (you remember the dark days when Arfcom was going through the redesign)

But I don't see that as a bad thing, it has also given me an open window to the world where I am informed and aware, it has entertained me in ways that would have been impossible to imagin,
( thanks Sarge)

I have come to understand and appreciate people of different cultures and belief's, I have learned about religion and politics, and how certain people can use both to hurt me and strip me of my rights.

But it has also shown me that many, many good people exist and has given me a sense of Brotherhood, and pride in our Country.

It has done all this and more. And I am thankful to be a very small part of it !!

What does arf.com mean to me?

This is question that I would find hard to answer writing in paragraph form. There's just too many thoughts that will enter into my head to answer such a question in that manner. But below I will list all of my thoughts as they pertain to this website and what it means to me:

-A place where I can go to take a break from so much of the mainstream BS I get exposed to daily

-A place where nearly all the members support freedom

-A place where the members would give you the shirt off their back, a place where members take care of each other

-A place where members support the right to own guns with no further strings attached

-A place where the vast majority of members support giving unborn babies a chance to live

-A place that opposes the Socialist element in our society

-A place where members mourn the loss of our countrymen (both military and civilian) and seek to take all correct steps (PC'ness aside) to deal with such matters

-A place where the members are patriotic and support their president (well, most anyway)

-A place where the people don't just say they support our troops in battle, but actually do things that show they care...such as donating money to families of those KIA or sending care packages to troops they may not even know

-A place where members strongly support our veterans of past wars

-A place where members seem to want to take care of themselves, rather than have the government take of everything for them

-A place where almost all members have strong morals, in a world becoming increasingly immoral

-A place that can sometimes make you laugh your ass off; a place that can sometimes make you cry

-A place where members aren't afraid to say what needs to be said, even what they may say may or may not be popular always

-A place where I can go relax and not have to look at a bunch of idiotic jibber-jabber from the Socialists in this country

-A place where you can get good advice about weapons, ammo and accessories that may someday save your life

-A place where members allow any viewpoint  to be expressed, but hold accountable those who wish to express anti-American views. In other words, they have to back up their positions with facts and don't get a free ride around here.

-And finally, it's a place where I feel at home. Most of the members here share my ideals, beliefs and in many cases, even my same goals in life. Therefore when I'm here, I don't feel that I am among a group of strangers. I feel as if I'm among family.

That is basically what ARF.com means to me.
