Just sliced open my hand on a can trying to get the recyling stuff out to the curb. After some bleeding and much cursing, I'm finally bandaged up. Wound is between 1/2" and 3/4" long and over 1/4" deep on the part just above the web of my left hand on the pointer finger. Hurt like a sumbitch when it happened and it was deep enough that I thought I'd be sick.

Flushed it with water, peroxide, and then iodine. Didn't bleed too much and doesn't exactly hurt much now, but I'm trying to decide if I need to go get stitches and/or shots, or just go to work.

Any advice?

Go get a tetanus shot if you haven't had one in a while. While you're out, get you some gel superglue. Pinch the cut closed, and dab on the superglue to hold it together. Cover with bandage. Supergluing the cut closed helps the wound to heal faster and leaves very little scarring.

Suck it up and go to work!

seriously if your debating if it needs stitches, you should probably have it checked out.

Unless your finger is dangling from a thin piece of sinew, infection and tetanus is you only worries.

Sue the manufacturer of the can, it was obviously defective.

High risk of infection. Get that treated rapidly should it occur.
Get your tetanus updated if you need.

I would rec suturing. You'll heal faster with less problems. the longer you wait the greater the risk of infection and after 6 hours they may not close it anymore. After 12 hours, no way.

You did a good job of cleaning the wound. No more peroxide at this point though. Use polysporin.

Don't get blood on the keyboard!

If you have iinsurance, go get stiches.
Link Posted: 10/14/2004 8:08:41 AM EST
butterfly bandaid

or just pack the wound with lots of salt
Link Posted: 10/14/2004 8:08:53 AM EST
Try Steri-strips or butterfly bandages if you don't want stiches or a dr. visit. 2 or 3 should do the job.

Not true.
Link Posted: 10/14/2004 8:14:55 AM EST
Hrm...

I usually just fill any wounds with neosporin and let 'em heal that way...if necessary, I band-aid, but my usual slices and dices don't usually require those..

For Pete's sake people, not every scratch requires sutures. If it's not a gaping laceration, clean it, apply topical antibiotic ointment, cover it, check on tetanus need and get back to your life.

TIG it closed.

I just read that you should only use water for wound cleansing. Peroxide, iodine and mercurichrome will prevent healing of those cells slightly damaged and may even destroy good cells. After cleansing apply an anti-bacterial ointment.

I am not a doctor.
I did not play one on TV.
But I did drive by a Holiday Inn last night.

No shit?! Me too.
Anyway, the use of peroxide in such a wound can be useful and I typically do a one time application. Anaerobes cause tetanus, gangrene(Clostridium tetani and perfringens) and the oxygen generated by the peroxide can kill them. It may impair healing if you keep using it, but I haven't seen too many problems with its use.
Ditto on the polysporin use. Not a neosporin fan. Too many adverse reactions to the neomycin component in it.

ETA: most bacteria that cause infections in such wounds are not affected by peroxide.

I would hardly call that a "sliced open" hand, I've had worse cuts on my eyeball.
Wash it with soap and water and it will be fine.
