Daughter called, loss of power steering and alt light is on.  Sounds like belt issue.  Sure enough, seems the belt is fine, just no tension on it.

Anything else it could be other than the belt tensioner?  I went and picked her up, left the car at the gas station.  Auto Zone has the part for about $56.00.  Based on what I have read it's a pain to get to, have to go through the wheel well to get the bottom bolt.

I'm just wondering because, although I had no tools with me, I could not seem to move the tensioner downward, the direction it would go to tighten the belt.  I tought if the spring was broke, the tensioner would at least be movable by hand?

I had a 1995 Saturn.  Best as I can remember, the tensioner relied on the internal spring to keep it tight.  Your spring sounds like it broke and then jammed.  My Saturn had the tensioner go bad too.  Think it's a fairly common problem.

Yes you will have to remove the splash shield on the pass side to be able to get in there. You also need a metric stuff. I am pretty sure is 10mm in there. You might need a wrench due to space issues. But it is only 2 bolts

Yea, you are correct.  Just got done... what a total pain in the ass to get to that top bolt.  $60.00 part, $35.00 in tools (did not own any metric stuff), so about $95.00 and 1 1/2 hours of torture to my hand and fingers... oh well, at least I did not have to pay a tow bill and shop bill to get it repaired.

Thanks guys.
